I just installed fedora core 5, and guess what? Linux recognized my hardware for the first time, the built-in network card, wireless card, ...etc. The internet worked fine, the package add/remover worked fine, ...except The next day, they aint working anymore, for no reason The Adobe Acroreader 7.05 aint workin The ATI drivers aint instaLLIN What could be the problem?

Well, unlike some other operating systems, linux doesnt really fuck things up all on its own ;)

Have you update or removed any packages?

When it comes to the gfx-driver, fc ships with a kernel wich doesnt allow non gpl-drivers, so you'll have to upgrade the kernel with a kernel from kernel.org .. Then install the ati drivers...

Gnome should have its own pdf reader, but acroreader should be installable trough your packagesystem..

It probably tries to connect to the remote packageserver..

Ok. To summarize the main problems:

1. Trying to install a software which needs libstdc++.so.5 but I have so.6, I installed the comapt lib and hence the so.5 is available, but still cannot run the sotware (RealPlayer)

2. Using the Add/Rem Package manager:
It works only when I connect to the internet. And tries to retrieve info and updates from the net, while I ahve the Fedora DVD, source of my installation. How to add packages then without accessing the net.

3. Adobe Acroreader 7.05 installed, when started, it showes the Logo box and then quit immediately. What could be the problem? The libstdc++ again?

4. ATI drivers are not easy to install...I will chaeck that site and see, but not before I fix the above problems first.

Ahh, a very dirty hack that sometimes work is to just symlink the so.5 file to the so.6 ..

However, this is problems that may have been caused by yum, which isnt really a good packagemanager imo.. Have you tried Ubuntu? the apt system is in my opinion, quite a lot better than yum.. (Im not a ubuntu zealot, i dont even use ubuntu myself, but its a really nice "just-works"-distro :)

It would be easier just to fix your net... if you want my help, give me the output of the commands in my other post.

But now I need thos problems to sort out. Otherwise I'll regeret installing linux on my machine.

I disagree, when something breaks, there is always a reason.. Some package that has been updated, removed or something...

Now, as I explained earlier, installing ati drivers is a bit more tricky on fc5 then in other distros, since the kernel doesnt allow non-free drivers.

I use Archlinux as my workstation, though "bleeding egde", its still fairly stable.

Now, quaker, i reccomend you do a full system upgrade with yum. Oh yeah, btw, did you install acroreader with yum, or on your own ?

OpenMotif src and xine-lib src

Adobe Reader is not launching

The gui package manager connects to server without asking it to do so

ATI drivers are not installing properly, linking to missing kernel or so ...

What to do?

First of, use the package system (yum). always.. Unless you _have to_ compile and install it by hand. (im pretty sure xineand openmotif are included in the package repositories)

Im guessing you dont have much experience with linux, if you get compile errors, its probably dependencies not met etc. And the ati driver, see the fedora faq.
