The official textbook is: drumroll please....

Sams "Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days (5th Edition)".

This Sams dude is indeed a clever one. I have Sams "Teach Yourself C++ in 10 Minutes" (2nd Edition)

The next book from Sams maybe "Teach Yourself C++ while sleeping!" :P

Anyway I am looking forward to this workshop. Thanks for helping.. :)
Have we sent the "Don't shoot, we're pathetic" transmission yet?
Well, out of curiousity, I happen to have the book in reference, however it is the second edition. Anyone know what differences there may be, or would I maybe be safe in using the second edition to follow along? Not trying to be difficult or anything, just curious.

Heya All,

Now that we've chosen a textbook, specifically one with 4 previous editions, there will invariably be questions about needing to purchase the 5th edition if you already have a previous edition - or if you can find a previous edition cheaper.

My response is this:

If you've already got the 3rd or 4th edition, you might post the Table of Contents here so we can review it, but in general just keep the edition you've got and see if you can follow along. If you find that you cant follow along, then it might be best to purchase the 5th edition. But as long as you're following along ok, understanding the material, and getting your questions answered, there's no reason to "upgrade."

If you don’t have a previous edition but where considering purchasing an earlier edition - don’t. Buy the 5th edition, its only $35.00 USD.

If you don’t have a previous copy of "Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days" but have another textbook you feel is acceptable for you, that's fine...but you wont be able to follow along closely with us and we wont be able to answer your C++ questions as effectively. So I encourage you to purchase the textbook.

If you don’t, you're still welcome to ask/answer C++ related questions as they relate to the current topics, use our questions as a way to measure your own understanding, and complete our projects as an exercise to help you develop your skills. If your lack of textbook becomes an issue, we'll politely let you know and ask you to either purchase the textbook, or direct your questions to either the "For Beginners" or "General Programming" forums. This workshop is ultimately for people who want to learn together by reading a common textbook and then answering each other's questions. It only stands to reason that if you don’t have the textbook, this might not be the best forum for you.

Cheers!

hey,

I found an online version of the second edition. Could anyone look through it to see if I need to buy the fifth edition? Here is the table of content: go!

It looks like the previous editions are close enough to the current edition (5th edition) that if you've got a physical copy of a previous edition, there probably isn’t a need for purchasing the latest edition - unless you find it necessary as we advance.

On the other hand, if you don’t have a previous edition, and were just planning to use the Free Online 2nd edition, I'd like to discourage it. Not because the 2nd edition wont be close enough for you to follow along with, but because there's just no replacement for having a physical copy of a book. It gives you the ability to go sit down and read it, fully absorb yourself in it, and then come to the computer only when necessary for doing exercises. It means you can read it while your friends/wife/parents are driving and you're in the car. You can read it at lunch, on a plane, et...As well, it comes with the nifty references on the inside covers. Finally, having the books means you can prop it on your desk and do the exercises with the book open without having to Alt-Tab back and forth between your compiler and your web browser. In general, a physical book is just an easier way to learn.

So in summary, if you've got a previous version, don’t go out and buy the 5th edition yet. If you don’t have a previous version, I encourage you to purchase the latest edition so you've got a physical copy. If you INSIST on using the free version online, it'll probably be good enough to get you by and there's little I can do about it as long as you keep up with everyone else...though it is 3 editions out of date, so you may not be getting the best presentation of the information.

Cheers!

I was planning on printing it since the first four chapters didn't seem that expansive, but I noticed now that it's 900 pages in a whole. Think I'll buy it.

I have version 2 of the official book. Is that waay too old, you think? I'm looking for opinions here, basically. I'd rather not get a new one.

Edit: Can someone buy better servers for these forums? :)

Hey,
I have the Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 21 day the 4th edition, and i just wanted to see if i could still use that instead of running out and buying the new one(not trying to be picky, just wanna save a few bucks). I have a link to Amazons Book View of it and it lists out the Table of Contents,

Table Of Contents

Thank you
