Someone said "Choose KDE"...why?... I assume this is GNOME vs KDE... i use GNOME... and I've never used KDE, does KDE have any sort of advantage over GNOME? is it all preference? What factors would guide a choice between the two desktops?

Just search any of the million flamewars on the internet about this. Don't derail this topic please.

How are you going about installing the printer? What exactly are you doing that is asking you to install "c shell"?

Someone said "Choose KDE"...why?

I assumed it was due to KDE being the original "default desktop" of SUSE pre-Novell/Ximian days. Or he might just like KDE. In the latter case, see Sander's reply.

Put the CD in the drive. Go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. Click Settings -> Repositories and check that the CD is in the list (or add it if it's not). Click OK to close the Repositories dialog and click the Update button on the main interface. If you do not have internet, synapic may complain that it could not get to a bunch of repositories. Don't worry about that.

Then, hit Ctrl + F, enter "tcsh" and Search. A new list of packages comes up. Right-click on tcsh, select "Mark for installation", click teh dialog away and hit the "Apply" button on the main screen. Synaptic will install tcsh for you and report any problems.

It you cannot install tcsh this way, try the csh package.
I tried that but the package wasn't there but that's okay because I got it working eventually. (after downloading and installing a bunch of other packages)

Thanks though.

I downloaded a cupswrapper package and some other package for my printer and when you put in this command:
sudo dpkg install <cupswrapperpath>.deb
It said I needed c shell. All taken care of though.[smile]

i only suggested it because gnome has far more issues than kde in suse 10. they're both good managers, but sometimes specific distros will have problems with one of the two. the real problem is that some of suse's developers have fanboy syndrome and they're not giving equal attention to the entire system. it's a fairly common problem among linux distributions.

i should also clarify that the 64-bit comment is due to sound issues in suse 10. there's numerous bugs in the sound system in the 32-bit version, possibly related to a mistake in the 32-bit dvd iso.
