Good 3DS max 7 book
Need basic coverage for most modeling aspects (i.e., low poly, texturing, bone, skinning, etc.. ) Really for people who are not modelers but need to be familiar with the software and concepts to make simple modifications. i.e., add/remove few polygons, use different texture, etc. It's better to do it yourself rather than the overhead of sending back to the modeler if changes are minimal. There are lots of 3DS max 7 books on Amazon used for $20 or so. Any one recommended?
If you are on a budget consider getting second hand copies of Max refrence books back to version 3 or so. In most cases the methods for basic functions are much the same.

I wouldn't go earlier than Max 5, max6 preferably. Alot of things have changed technically, especially from 5 to 6, and since what you want to learn is mainly specific, technical stuff, you're going to want something up to date. You're usually going to pay for what you get though. Books that retain a high cost are normally better quality. Foundational books normally run pretty high, you can get bargain-bin prices on some lesser quality specialty books (like Secrets of the Pros). As far as the best one, just read the reviews on Amazon. If you want a reference type thing, which you may because of your use of the program, consider the 3ds Bible.
