Even gamedev.net puts ads up, but you don't see topic after topic written on how badly people hate them.

People at arcadeathome.com do complain alot about the ads in the forum. However, they have that annoying huge banner...

If the ads are used in a fictional sense (e.g. advertising products which don't exist, by companies which only exist in-game -- think Nuka Cola in Fallout) then I have no problem with them. If I had to view Nike, Sony Playstation, Ford, and Swiss Chalet commercials ingame, I'd have a serious problem with it, simply because I already paid for the game, and shouldn't have to pay for advertisements on top of this. And if they were live ads being dynamically sent to the game via the internet, you can be sure I'd be adding routing rules to my firewall in order to block them. I'd rather pay a little more for the game and not have to view ads.

Poor you, having to live in the same virtul world with ads. The big scary ads will brainwash your mind.

Now seriously, I don't see why people are having problem with an ad on their load screen(it draws my concentration from the loading bar!!!) or with billboards in urban enviroments(maybe people in the future do drink Pepsi. Wait a minute. I don't want to live in a future when people actually drink Pepsi!!!)

I mean, you actually say "I am so dumb, that any commercial I see will make my buy the product regardless if I need it or not".

My opinion is that, in a society (e.g. the one I live in, not some fictional one) which is saturated with obnoxious 50-foot high billboards, video commercials at intersections, annoying jingles every 7 minutes on television, and numerous spam mails sent to my (internet and postal) mailbox without my express consent, if I decide that I want to engage in a minor form of escapism (e.g. a computer game, movie, book, or walk around the block), the last thing I want to see is an advertisement!

Your response is very terse, and is arguing my opinion, to which I am entitled. Insulting me because of this only prescribes to an unreasonably negative attitude, which is not welcome here.

I think you got me wrong. I don't say people that hate ads are stupid. I say that people that are easily convinced by ads are not very smart, therefore people who are afraid of ads convincing them must have a very low self esteem.

I already stated in my original post. This is about having you not paying any money to play the game in exchange with watching ads

And I'm the opposite: I'd rather pay a little less for the game and view ads.

Some of us don't have the money to "live the dream" (or are lacking money because we "live the dream" elsewhere in our life).

What if there were a free/cheaper version with ads but you could pay to have them removed, like Opera used to do?

It's very bad idea, even if player didn't pay single penny. It's even worse than adds in TV, and note that some people started to ignore TV because of adds.

Huh?

It's worse than ads in TV?

TV ads interrupt the show in order to show you products. Wouldn't it be nice if, instead of advertisements, the characters in the show just drank a coke now and then?

Ads in games don't interrupt the game, they coincide with the game. Of course you're not going to advertise Doritos in Elder Scrolls 5 (or that stupid Bawls campaign in Run Like Hell), but when Crazy Taxi says "Take me to KFC!" theres absolutely nothing wrong with it.

So Loco Cola ads are okay, just not Coca Cola? [rolleyes] Another case of people going out of their way to be offended.

Why don't you try this

Aloc Ekoc: An delicious alien drink that'll permenently boost your IQ by 100

Aloc Ekoc = Coke Cola spelled backward

It would work if the comercials don't pop up on the screen. Perhaps have pepsi posters on your castle wall unless people pay. Or maybe change the loading screen to a car driving around. What about a advertisment in the text box.

/roxorz: "Train to east entrance!"
/<Teammate>: "The dragon respawned!"
/Advertisment: The new Honda accord, now with 0 apr finaincing
|until 2008; starting at only $15,689! Buy it now.
/You were hit by the dragon; you die.
