Take a quick look at this screen shot. Long explanation: I am getting both the gnome and kde panels, for some reason. Previously to this, logging in remotely through cygwin I only got the kde bar, (by running the command startkde). Then on a linux terminal running gnome I ran the same command from within a terminal window, which produced both bars. Then after logging out of kde on that system, it went straight back to the state it was in before I ran kde. Now when trying to login remotely again using cygwin it has appeared as above... any ideas why? (or how to get rid of the gnome panel at the top)
