The Art of Creating Games...
Open your mind and think about your first game you ever played... did you like it or not? If you did, what were the reasons. And if you still like it today as it is, what are the reasons. My first PC-game was Red Alert, I don't remember it release date however I was young about 12 years old (wow, were I allowed to play that kind of games then?) and I loved the way it was. The graphics maybe weren't anywell but I liked it cause... I don't know why, maybe cause it was my first PC game ever, and it was this "first time feeling" for the gaming on a PC. You maybe felt the same when you played your first game. I still like Red Alert today and Worms when I played that, both are using very big pixels, but I still like that. But no other game in that kind of design would satisfy today, do get what I mean about this "first time feeling". However, The reason I started this thread was to make you people discuss about what makes a game a game and what makes a game successful. Why did Counter-Strike (Half-Life Mod) success so well? Can we ever find why some games always sucks and some never? Why made Half-Life to a so good game? Here are my thoughts and inklings about what makes a game to a good game: * The Design to the game creates the limits in the game * The story of the game or the concept creates aslo how we like it but it aslo depends on what kind of person we are, do we like fast cars? Then we maybe like racing games, do we like shooting? Then we maybe like action games and so on. * The graphic, the sound, the music decides how good you experience the game's world, bad graphic, sound or music can maybe makes you feel uncomfortable or no good feeling of reality. * The game logic, then I mean how much you can do the game, how limited you are by using your inputs and your imagination when playing. It decides a lot, for example, Half-Life 2 won gaming awards again mostly because of (I think it was because of) it Freedom to touch objects like you do in reality which gave more visions and dreams about "what If I do this or that", and when you could do these things, your happiness and what think about the game and game-playing increased. * The input limits, I only mention this reason because longer back in time when you couldn't change your control settings, you maybe did'nt like a game because of the control you had to play with. But now in every game (yes in every game) you can change most of the controls, when you're moving forward in a game. Now the "reasons" above here were only what I THINK that makes game good, they are not facts only thoughts and opinions from me and my brain or whatever you call it ^_^. Now share your thoughts and your first PC game. Greetings, Max "Newbie" K, from Söråker in Sweden.
This probably belongs in the design forum, not the writing forum. The writing forum is fro discussing creating game stories and writing in general, not graphics or gameplay. But since it does specifically mention stories I'll leave it here.
I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
