My MMORPG

Doing some designing for the MMO that i will make one day. I know I have lots of learning and practicing to do first but no one can convince me that I wont eventually make my own MMO. I plan for it to be a MMORPG 3rd person shooter that would control kinda like gunz online but it will look like Fly for Fun (cell shaded and colorful). It will also have alot of fantasy based elements. PKing will be a big part of this game. Respectable battles with an evenly matched opponent will always be incoraged but slaughtering noobs will land you seroius punishment. Once you kill someone 10 or more lvs below you you will get a number of pk points equal to your level minus theirs, times your level divided by 10. (if your level 80 and you kill a lv 40 (80-40)*(80/10)= 20*8= 160). Now If you have any pk points, even one, guards will kill you on sight. Guards will be around 10 lvs higher than the max character level. Once a guard kills you you go straight to jail and you stay there untill you work off all your pk points by playing a mini game. Theres always a chance that some of your items or money will be taken before you leave jail. This chance is increased deppending on how many pk points you have but it is generaly low. Im going to make sure that when a highlv gets caught for pking it will take him/her a really long time to work off his/her points. But they will have another option. if they are in a strong guild or have alot of high lv friends they can call for a jail break. Now a jail break occurs when people from the outside comes and kills all the guards at the jail house. Obviously this will not be an easy task, and it will take alot of man power and team work. Once a jail break occurs everyone in jail can rush out before more guards arrive/respawn, but you still keep the pk points you didnt work off but they will be inactive. The guards wont kill you onsight but if you kill another low lv the pk points you get will add on to the ones you already had and you will have to work twice as long to get out of jail. Thats about it for my pk system. If you guys are interested I'll post more things I have in mind, like the Guild war system.

This might belong in the lounge, but I'd have to say you're taking the right steps. Fully designing the game from ground up is key to coding it right.
We should do this the Microsoft way: "WAHOOOO!!! IT COMPILES! SHIP IT!"

wonderful, most people just say i want to create an MMORPG but youre one of the few i didnt have to say think it out first, think of a story line, how the chat system will be created etc.. good work
Also think about what would happen if an innocent newbie got in the middle of a fight between 2 highly ranked players (assuming everyone can just roam around everywhere).

You don't want to punish the player for something that might be an honest mistake. You could always set up a system where if a player kills a highly ranked person as well as a newbie within, say, 1 second, or a little less or each other, then that could be considered an accident and the player is not punished, or just punished less.

Sounds cool, but it seems like you have only 1 idea, considering your going to need a whole world and level-ups and items and a fighting system etc.

Good luck, its a lotta work but if you are determiend im sure it will happen.

Glad to see i got positive replies. I'll tell a little more about my plans.

There will be a friend/team feature which gives you friend exp for teaming with your friends. The more time you team with that same friend, the more friend points you will earn. You will be able to lv up your friendship. (for instance one person can be a lv 2 friendship, some one you spend more time fighting with would be a lv 4 or 5 friendship). You get stat boosts when you team up with friends. The higher lv the friendship the greater the stat boost. This will greatly incourage team work and making long term friends in my game.

Now as for the guild wars. Every guild member who is, for example, lv 50 or higher could be randomly chosen to be apart of a four man team to compete in the guild war. guild war will be capture the flag, king of the hill, or an all out death match(choosen by random). In wich up to 8 guilds compete together. If a guild doesnt have 4 lv 50s or higher online at the time they wont be able to compete. This guild war setup also encourages everyone who is lv 50 or higher to be friends and fight together to build a high lv friendship. That way whoever gets randomly choosen to be in the war will boost each others stats. The guild wars will defanetly give a great prize. Something that cant be obtain anywhere else, so the guild wars will be a big part of the game. Im also considering making it like a tournament.

Thats it for now. I might post more ideas once I finish my pong clone.

Maybe you do - in the real world, which I believe MMORPGs try to emulate on some level (a social level at least), you're punished for mistakes, honest or... dihonest. Learning from your mistakes should be encouraged, I think.

I'm going to move this thread from For Beginners to Game Design, I think this is probably better suited to that particular forum, where you can get some more feedback on the ideas.

It's good to see you're actually planning things out rather than jumping right in. An MMO is a large and complex project, and you'll definately need to do a lot of work to get to that stage, but if you work hard and put in the effort, then yes, you can get there.

It does sound fun.
Realistically you're not going to get to a point where you can do a large part of the coding for some years; BUT if you fully flesh out a proper design document then you may be able to get a team of people who can code well. They won't come unless you look very professional though and allow them creative input. Being able to do some other things like build a decent website and doing 2/3D art will make it more likely too.

But for now just polish and refine that design. Discuss it on these forums but don't try and make it until the design is good and professional and something you'd show a proper business.
