Anyway, I would never do that with an online character. Online, I am male and male only. Plus people often act perverted over female characters online, I would not want to deal with that.

Yes, but while they're flirting, they're not killing you. Think about it. [smile]

Games where the gender is just a toggle of your character model and nothing more, I will pretty much always pick male.

Games where gender of your avatar affects (effects? its late, and I'm wondering which is corret. Oh well) gameplay (females get X bonus, males get Y. Some class is always female. Playing male amazon warrior would just be odd,...) I will play which gender offers the gameplay I feel like trying out.

Female avatars don't bother me, but when online, assume everyone is a guy till you hear clear voice chat/webcam. Things are safer that way for any guys that choose to think of things with people online that go past just common friends :P

I only play as female characters in fighting games, since those usually have the faster moves (I hate slow fighting game characters).

i always tend to pick fast over tough (in many styles of games) and in many games female characters often do have this advantage.

When I create a character however I almost always go for male.

same here, unless there is a difference between them( in terms of gameplay ), in which case i have to make a decision.

but i dont really care, the gender of the character is not something that particularly bothers me...

This leads me to believe that the perverts are indeed not those who play something else than their original gender, but those people ( men only ) that think that all female characters in a game are played by real female persons just waiting to be their willing sex toys. You want to know why so few women play MMORPG's ? Get out and try to be one for a day.

So very true... though I suspect a lot of women are playing as male characters to avoid these sorts of problems.

What about Metroid? You certainly didn't have a choice.
You got me, I play as a female in Metroid, but I didn't know that until the end.

To put it simply, I honestly don't understand how people can be intimate over the internet.
You can be intimate via USPS or carrier pigeon, why not the internet?

As for people who never found out (like I did) that they were dealing with someone misrepresenting themselves... so what? They must have recieved some intangible gratification from participating with the roleplayer, and probably the person pretending gained something as well. Does it really matter in the long run?
I think any abuse of anonymity is a little bit shady, but intentionally misrepresenting yourself in an interpersonal relationship is downright reprehensible. That soldier in the first Gulf War who wrote romantic letters and got engaged to some five or six women during his tour of duty was way out of line. If you pretend to be a female gamer (not a female character in-game, but an actual woman playing the game) when you aren't, and cultivate relationships with other gamers under those false pretenses, then you're behaving fraudulently. I disapprove with that.

If you're just staying in character as a female, then that's fine by me. Someone's got to be the amazon or sorceress, or else there won't be any good ranged attacks. Barbs can only throw so far.
I appologise, I should have clarified. I meant that I found it don't understand how people can be imtimate over a game, rather than the internet as a whole where audio and visual communcations exist.

Games are for enjoyment, for escape. Games are not a place you go to meet other people so that you could date them, but a lot of people seem to disagree with this. I find the notion of cybersex to be absurd, myself.

My aunt and another family member met people online, and each ended up marrying. But, they didn't meet through games. I suppose the problem lies with different opinions on acceptibility of behavior in online environments such as MMOGs. Some people are playing for the game, while others are playing for social interaction. Some are engaging in antisocial behavior, while others are simply exploring the game world.

These are the four types, that I'm sure you are all familiar with -- achiever, socializer, killer, and explorer. Explorers aren't affected by the gender thing, and neither are Killers or Achievers. That only leaves socializers to be concerned about, and while few people don't fall somewhat into the Socializer catagory, I think that those who place more importance on that particular aspect of the game are the ones most likely to be hurt by the gender masquerade.

Usually female.

If I've got to stare at something's ass for hours on end, I'd prefer it to be something pleasant to look at.

I'm 140lbs and very fast myself, fast characters are the way I think and usually try to move. It's a shame I don't have any belts though [sad]

I think you're off base there, I would bet that there are more women playing MMORPG's than any other type of game. They are still the minority, but amongst female gamers MMORPG's are popular. I first heard of Guild Wars (not quite an MMORPG, I know) from an enthusiatic female gamer (in person).
Programming since 1995.
Why do you say Guild Wars is not exactly an MMORPG? I never played it, so i don't know. But i thought it was.
