What should i learn ?

Hello everyone ! I'm kinda new to A.I ... Ok here is the deal, i got a small homework for one of my professor to do ( algo ) and i was wondering what could i choose ? Yeeah i could take anything ... but i also wanna try something that will be usefull for me later ( i am making a 2D rpg ). I think i could find something related to the I.A i will have to do for my NPCs or Enemies ( i want something "advanced", not a simple list of repetive actions ) . Ups, sorry i should have mentioned taht i had already done A* in the past ( not a perfect one off course but the basics ) I dont think working on A* is a good idea, since my map data are not complete at the moment :/ otherwise i would have choose that ;)
Then, steering behaviors. ^_^
Well, I learned Finite State Machines and THEN moved on to pathfinding. I don't use an algorithm for pathfinding, but I got my own "waypoint" system. (Maybe it is similar to a pathfinding algorithm that I don't know about.) If you need more info, feel free to mail me at: zubair@armyants-studio.com

I googled "steering behaviors", if i'm right its again a pathfinding problem, and i would like something more relative to the A.I of Npcs, enemies if possible :)

Yeah, fsm would be more along the lines of what you're asking about then. Check out the gammasutra feature about the halo 2 ai, among other things.
