Getting Started
Ok I really want to get into game art. I want to make a game by my self, and with the DarkGameSDK programming will be a sinch. Networking I really enjoy doing so that shouldnt be a problem, especially if Raknet ever decides to work. I want to be able to make my games art as well. Im wondering what would be the cheapest, but quick way to get started on 3d modeling.
well there is blender (free), milkshape (very cheap, under $100 i believe), 3ds max ($3,000) or maya (not sure but probably around 3ds max's price). after you get your modeling program find all the tutorials you can and do them all. with 3d game art the only way to get better is through practice, practice and of course more practice. if you don't know something try to join some game art forums (like here) and ask all the questions you need to or ask through the gamedev.net chatroom if you want. eventually you should be able to do some pretty advanced stuff.

The best two programs for your money when getting started are:
Wings3d - good because its free and its simple. Easy to learn, easy to use and produced good results.
Silo - Best modeler available, with 2.0 you get unwrapping features, texturing, rendering and other features and costs 10 less or more than most other programs. Its 109$ and cannot be beat.
After that, tutorials.

does Silo export to .X, I need to read more about it, but it looked good in the small amount of time I did get to check it out.
