Now...
There are several things to check, if you have VIA motherboard...
1) Abovementioned fix for VIA chipsets for Win2K
2) VIA 4-in-1 drivers (4.25 is the latest, I think) from www.viatech.com
3) Detonator 3 drivers (I use 6.31)
4) For TNT2 DISABLE AGP 4X and Fast Writes in BIOS
That should do it...

OGL devlpmnt on Win2k....CRASH!!!

95% of crashes in NT4/5 are driver related.
I don''t understand 1 thing though, are you saying you were compiling, and then the system crashed? Or you left the file open in the editor, and you did something to cause the system to crash?
(oh, and it is a bit better to use a editor that automatically does a backup for you, like ultra edit.)

I was writing in VC++. The I build and run the program. The system crashes and takes the file that was open in VC with it!
Microsoft Windows®2000 Patch for AGP Applications on AMD Athlon™ and AMD Duron™ Processors
Description of Issue
An issue has been identified that could result in the corruption of video data shared between AGP graphics adapters and AMD Athlon™ or AMD Duron™ processors when running Microsoft Windows®2000. This issue is independent of system chipset and has been observed when running Ziff-Davis 3D Winbench™2000 and Mad Onion 3DMark™ 2000 in benchmarking mode.

Sounds like write cache was enabled then... turn that off, since things can crash, at having your data in ram is not good. (write cache can be turned off by going into device manager, and clicking on the HD, then properties, then one of the tabs have write cache, just unmark it.)
As for that patch, I tried it a few weeks back, and I got a few stop errors, so I killed the .reg entry, and all is fine again. Go figure.

You have Direct-X 8.0.
Try to re-install Direct-X 7.0.
My system is :
P III 533 - 256 RAM - GeForce (Detonator Driver) - Win 2K and
All of my OpenGL programs work well, no crash.
I think that you problem is Direct-X 8.0
