Good luck to anyone taking part in the competition... but make sure that if you get to the finals, you obtain agreements in writing that EA wont use your intellectual property without your permission.

It is stated in the rules that all participants retain full intellectual properties.

EA's not perfect, but it has been far more fair about I.P and Employees Rights than some other we shall not name because they are Ubisoft (oops).

A statement in the advertising does not constitute a legal agreement between the parties as to IP ownership. Hence my suggestion of getting it down in writing.

wow, I'm amazed they are not inviting people from the gaming schools like Full Sail and Digipen to participate. What's up with that?
EA said:
"Since this our first foray into programming competitions we have
decided to keep it small and is thus by invite only."

Theres the reason there...

The University of Central Florida (which is included in the list) is about 5 minutes down the road to Full Sail. I believe UCF has/making an internship with EA, therefore not including Full Sail could be intentional.

what program is it exactly they are using?

It sounds almost identical to a program we used in our university course called "robocode" where user-programmed tanks fight each other (head to head or in teams)

Unbeleivable. EA even make you watch an advert before you can read their competition page.

Like anyone is going to contribute anything that can be considered Intellectual Property. I had no idea you could stick IP on an idea.

Actually, I think UCF is involved because EA has just started an accreditted graduate degree program with the Computer Science department at UCF. The requirements for entering that program is pretty stiff. For starters, they only take people from accreditted four year universities/colleges, and then there's the portfolio requirement. But I think winning the contest or placing near the top would definitely give you a pretty good shot at entering that program which seems to be 100% employment when you finish.

IP is exactly that - an idea, concept, etc. Otherwise it'd be called physical property and would by protected by standard anti-theft, anti-vandalism, etc laws instead of copyrights, trademarks, and/or patents.
