Your modelling package is as good as you are by using it.

I've only watched the short movie about modo, so it's hard to say anything about it. Clearly it isn't exactly cheap for just a modelling tool. Choosing the right tool also depends on what you primarily model, if it's organic then you might want to have a look at ZBrush.
Pretty render pictures don't tell me much about the software, they primarily need a good artist, not the best tool ever.

I hear this saying making the rounds everytime someone asks about opinions on a specific package; truth is that what package you choose plays a big part in everything you do in 3d.

An expensive package doesn't make you a good modeler, but a cheap one can be your acheilies heal. Learning on say, wings3d or nendo isn't bad for you, their simplisity is actually very good at keeping the modeling between you and your eye. However, if you want to begin to work faster then your gonna need something more powerfull, if you want to use NURBS, you'll need something new. There are very usefull features that you just dont get, not that you need them, but your gonna have to work much harder because of it.

I think the statement is better put, "Your modelling package is as good as you are while using it.....with respect to limiting features"

What Modo, in my opinion, is really selling this time around is the ability to QUICKLY, and I mean quickly, unwrap models. Their new tool is amazing, thats all I have to say. Thats all it offers above the competition in my opinion though and if you dont have what....6000$ or something like that laying around there are better choices. Look into silo 2.0 which will be out before christmas, basic modeler with some great new features (including ZB like displacement PAINTING!) and other stuff including phenome mimicing!(oh yeah, 109 dollars!!)
