Sigh...Noobs have notoriously short memories, they can't even remember what they posted one day ago.
I_Smell_Tune: perhaps you can first sell online, and then after the game gets famous and successful youd have no problem getting it into wal-mart?

now a question from me:
why do people say 20% profit in online selling?

rounding up i see 50$ monthly going for webpage, 10% going for money transfer, maybe some 40% taxes, where does the rest go?

the initial time/cost for webpage setup is neglictable in relation to developing the game.

seems to me online selling is very high profit, and considering the almost zero expanse its almost zero risk... i dont see a reason to skip the online option.

Iftah.

Ok, so I talked with a friend that works at Walmart (not a store front but in management some place I forgot his title and closed the MSN window, gg me!) anyways, he figures to get on you on the shelf (I said for myself so he would actually listen) in the worst spot in most of their stores (they will only try you in an area near you first btw until you're proven) is about $100,000 for a year. That's one box wide (small box size not the big ones) and about 10 deep. You'll likely get on about 10 store shelves maybe 20 if the area has more stores.

Ouch. I knew it cost a pretty penny to get on the shelves of Wal-Mart, but $100,000 for a single box space? I don't see how you could ever make enough sales to cover that...

I've read through that Help Wanted thread, and it seems that the business moderator Obscure has already addressed all the problems with your present business plan, Tuna. There's a reason why everyone is writing these things, and it's not because we wish you to fail, it's because we wish for you to succeed. If you are indeed serious about making a MMORPG then it would be folly not to consider online distribution, since the game genre is perfectly suited for that.

Best of luck again!
But didnt you say Mr Tuna that your game was going to up to 5 years in development, thats quite a chunk of time in the future, just think back 5 years how the marketplace dynamics have changed, 5 years time the internet is going to be bigger, faster, easier to sell on, people more willing to buy from it etc. You are crazy to WANT to get involved with shops, distribution, warehouses, returns, instead of using the FUTURE.
Thanks for the reply. That seems like a pretty bad deal, although I'm sure that with a higher investment than the $100k you get more. Please ask him how much it would cost to have cardboard standups, posters, etc. And does that whole "depending on your area" apply to software also?

Because you are only taking distribution into account. When you factor in development and marketing, the profit margin drops significantly. I believe 20% is a pretty good lower bound taking all these factors into account.

Good grief what a sentence. Can anyone translate that to something readable, ever heard of punctuation :)

Retail is just about always going to be a good channel for sales. Can you imagine the day when 'Christmas Morning: Ok Timmy, go checkout your desktop, I downloaded that WWII game you've wanted'.
