OptimalGrid & MMO quake
Anyone got any views on / experience of OptimalGrid? To some extent, this looks like the holy grail for a lot of people here, but I don't know enough about the topic to judge it really. presentation on how they used it to make an MMO quake2: (pdf)

Is this the same Grid that IBM has been toting for years?
They tried making a Quake 2 on that. It didn't run very well. We've also had people who worked on it (the Grid) before, post on this forum, reporting super-second response times (i e, "lag").
Butterfly.net tried to build MMO infrastructure on the Grid, but I never heard of anything actually shipping on that, which I also take as a bad sign.

I'll admit it *sounds* awesome, especially the presentation but I too would like to hear some positive reports before I really try it. It's probably quite a time investment to try it, just to see it doesn't fit your needs.
You could send an email to "info@emergent.com" and see what they have to say; that's where butterfly.net went.
Also, if someone from Butterfly or Emergent comes to this list, I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say, because there is a dearth of actual technical details (or even high-level specifications) on their public web sites.

I just found this thread. Having looked at the Quake 2 optimal grid a few months ago it seemed quite interesting, however the major problem is that you can spread the cpu processing across as many pcs as you want, but most people will still be limiting by the uploading from those pcs to the clients anyway. Many of the people who have tried this sent all the information to the clients back out through one internet connection; hence lag.
Having also tried to deal with Butterfly/Emergent, I have been a bit wary of the grid technologies. However, our IT Director seems to think they're quite good still, so I guess I'll have to live with them.

What are you using it for? Enterprise applications, or real-time games?
