in direct3d, what''s the difference between ambient, diffuse, and specular light?
The same as OpenGL

materials can have three reflective qualities, and lights can have three different colors...

Ambient is light thats just everywhere, and hits everything equally

Specular light is light from things like spot lights

Diffuse doesn''t attentuate as much as specular light does as the light source gets further away from the lit object.

Maybe someone with a better understanding can clearify...
