Federal Anarchy
The Plot
-------------------------
Two years ago, under intense pressure from the United states government, the United Nations drafted and signed an international treaty forbidding foreign relations with any country under communist rule or accused of massive human rights violations until said countries overthrew their despotic leaders and accepted their role as members of the “global community.” The treaty’s (stated) intentions were to better the world by forcing those countries to eliminate their totalitarian governments and adopt ones better suited to a peaceful world in the new millennium. Despite these lofty goals, several First-World countries such as Great Britain and Japan took objection to the treaty and refused to sign, claiming it to be “strongarm tactics” to “oppress the citizens of the affected countries.”
One month after the bill was signed by almost the entire membership of the United Nations, North Korea, China, and North Vietnam mobilized their military forces, drafted nearly all male civilians able to assist in the war effort. Their first strike happened quickly, and the United States was caught off-guard. On July 18, 1999, four ICBMs fired by North Korean terrorists smashed into the East Coast of the US, targeting the cities of New York, Washington DC, Boston, and Miami. These four, if not nearly destroyed by the blasts, were irradiated to the point where all life was eliminated. Over the next several days, nearly the entire East Coast was covered in a lethal blanket of gamma radiation. Hours later, several more missiles crashed into the most prominent and powerful countries that signed the treaty, in most cases rendering the entire country uninhabitable.
On the day the missiles landed, China launched a massive military offensive against the United States’ West Coast, much like the “blitzkrieg” used by the Third Reich and the invasion of Normandy over fifty-five years previously. They moved with precision, quickly taking control of all major cities and tactical positions from northern Washington to southern California. The US, having been caught in the pincers of an invasion, attempted to repulse the Chinese troops with those of their own. Despite being outnumbered nearly 3:1, guerilla tactics and several risky moves paid off, as they managed to repulse the hostile force after three months of constant war, martial law, and bloodshed.
It has been 2 years since a weapon has been fired at the Chinese.
The reformed United Nations tried the Chinese Prime Minister, dictator of North Korea, and their top-tier military officials in an international court and executed them. Deeply troubled by the war, the United States set out to rebuild their former glory as the premier country in the world.
Five months later, the director of the FBI died due to a heart attack. George Hastwieder (name change? –Ferrett), a ruthless man and a protégé of the previous director, took his position. Having numerous underworld contacts and secret extensive files, he was capable of blackmailing nearly every highly-ranked government official. Less than a week after being sworn in, he held a private meeting with the President and several key members of Congress. The next morning, the United States formally withdrew from the United Nations, which soon collapsed due to the loss of its primary member.
Hastweider then met again with the President, this time to discuss an executive order that would ban the sale or trade of any firearm. The President refused on Constitutional grounds and angrily dismissed the Director. Several days later, when the question was brought up at a press conference, the President publicly announced the blackmail attempts and decried Hastweider’s actions, calling for his immediate resignation. After the conference, the two armored personnel carriers escorting the convoy went rogue and destroyed it, assassinating the President, First Lady, and the Secretaries of State and Defense. While Hastweider was immediately accused of the murders, he covered his tracks well; not a single shred of evidence could verify the former President’s claims or tie the Director to the President’s assassination. The Vice President, once in office, was much more willing to accept Hastwieder’s “advice,” essentially becoming a puppet.
The two of them quickly issued a series of orders temporarily suspending the Constitution and disbanding Congress, greatly strengthening the military, and reinstating the national draft. Over only a couple of months, the United States became essentially a Communist country, with Hastweider as the leader.
Needless to say, this callous abuse of the system prompted nation-wide rioting. Hastweider instituted a national state of martial law, but not even the by now formidable police and military forces could hold back the people. The riots lasted for several weeks before the leaders of the movement were found and executed on national television. After that, the riots slowly died off as the public began to fear the awesome power wielded by Hastweider. A small guerilla force remained, though, watching the events and waiting for the perfect moment to strike…

Sounds good, except for a few key points:
1. Where the hell did Korean terrorists acquire intercontinental ballistic missiles? It might be possible for them to construct a makeshift thermonuclear device from illegal parts, but an entire series of billion-dollar missiles? I don''t buy it, and I hope your audience won''t either.
2. The United States would obliterate any nation firing nukes at it within seven minutes of dust-off.
3. Why did North Korea attack a blatantly superior foe in the first place?
4. The Constitution of the United States specifically prohibits itself from being "suspended," as you put it. It is politically impossible for one person to overrule all of Congress and the Supreme Court. There''s this cool thing called "checks and balances" that you seem to have conveniently skipped over in your story.
5. United States gone Communist? Do you even know why the last two World Wars were fought? Not to sound harsh, but you should pick up a history book and try again.
6. Let''s pretend for a moment that the draft was reinstated, and the United States military swelled like a cancer. It would become a hodgepodge of inexperienced soldiers with no mentionable skills and zero morale. Basically, an army not worth funding. There are entrance exams you need to pass to get into the military, in case you were not aware of that.
This is intended to be constructive criticism. I hope it helps. Conspiracy theory is hard to write believably, I know.

GDNet+. It's only $5 a month. You know you want it.
The US could suspend the constitution by declaring martial law, but it would only work since most of the population is already dead. This would also allow for a feudalistic type of government, not communistic. However, since all the important ppl are dead, and everywhere is cut off from one another, I highly doubt you''d achieve any sort of economic or governmental infrastructure for many long years.

What''s this about ''North Vietnam''? You know Vietnam is unified now, right? You didn''t win that war, you know And why didn''t the US fire nukes in return when attacked? In the face of that sort of aggression, I expect it would happen. What about Russia and France, both of whom boast far larger nuclear arsenals than China... what were they doing while all this happened? And given the size of the catastrophe that apparently hit the US, would they still be the ''primary member'' of the UN? I think you need to do a little more research and think about the wider picture a bit more, if it''s essential that this plot is believable.
Couple of problems, but overall nicely done . Firstly, the US and most modern countries have decent (not perfect by far though) nuclear defense systems.
Secondly, after the countries launched upon us (where did they get the missles?), since we are still in the UN, we and the rest of the UN would probably launch back at them.
Thirdly, if most of the country is rioting, where is Hastweider going to get any troops to support him?
Just some thoughts, it is a nice plotline so far though .

Wow. A lot more comments then I thought I would get. I need to come here more often.
1.) North Korea: Yes NorthKorea isn''t the most civilized and technological country, but teamed up with china, it very well could be.
2.) The fact that the US has a high EGO, /me points to senator lieberman''s comments about the US having the best military in the world in the vice presidential debates. And with the fact that the bill was passed, the united states might have missed out on the fact. Also they wouldn''t be suspecting it. Obviously I need help drafting up on that part.
3.) Rioting. You got people with pistols at most semi automatic submachineguns, against the military with tanks, full auto, and that kind of yum yum gummie bears and fruit cakes. The rioters would be quickly dispensed. I need help with this part too.
4.) Yes I know of the constitution, world war one/two, the cold war and the rest of the history. I''m not brain dead. The fact is that you have a guy, who can black mail and ruin people''s careers. All the sissy beurocrats won''t stand up to him and his control. Look what happened to mister all mighty president. Taking only 1/3 of the US population is left alive, and there isn''t any real way to organize the west coast at this point, I doubt there would be much of a organized resistence against the goverment''s choice to take away their rights.
5.) I forgot to mention. The militia/terrorist group standing up, are the secret service men that were in a different decoy convoy of the president. They are coming back to reap revenge against their president. (note: My Captain; poem about President Lincoln''s assassination for Tom)

It''d be much easier to just make imaginary places with these kinds of wars. More creative as well.
OK, it seems you misunderstand the concept of nuclear warfare. The reason nobody has fired hostile nuclear missiles on other countries is the simple fact that doing so would most likely end in mass world destruction. The average ICBM must enter a near-orbital position to deliver its payload, and they take somewhere aroudn an hour or two to get to their destinations. Within only a few minutes of detection, the US would launch quite a good many ICBMs against the hostile nation. Too many countries are paranoid about the US wanting to destroy them. If you didn''t know, there was a recent situation in Russia where a missile base detected 4 incoming ICBM''s from the United States. The guy who had his hand on the key decided not to turn because he would have expected the US to launch more like 1000 if they were really interested in nuclear destruction. It did turn out to be a faulty sensor, so we are lucky to be alive today... Of course, the US would almost definitely retaliate to any nuclear threat with a full nuclear arsenal, basically initiating a massive volley of ICBMs between all capable countries. The entire world would be irradiated within hours, and life would soon cease to exist...
so basically, you wouldn''t find me playing that game because it would be too unbelievable and I''d be saying "no f***ing way" every few minutes...

Forget that. Have them fire EMP weapons at the States. This would knock out all their power and electronics (most permanently), and disorientate people @ ground zero. This would cripple communications and a lot of defenses. Granted, serious military installations would have EMP protection, but the majority of installations would not.
