alpha channels
Adobe Photoshop can handle this, thought it takes a bit of trickery to go from translucency to a plain alpha channel. First, you must create the actual alpha channel. Make sure your image only has one layer containing the entire image plus the translucency information necessary. Use the Quick Mask thingy to make a selection based upon that layer. Create an alpha channel, then cut that selection out of the new alpha channel. Now for the tricky part. You have to remove all translucency from the main image layer. I''ve got an action set up that does it like this. Duplicate the layer, say, 4 times. Then merge. Repeat this process until every bit of translucency is gone. Then fill in what''s still transparent with a solid color based upon what''s in the opaque regions--in other words, surround the opaque region with the same color, otherwise filtering will give you annoying halos and such. That''s it. Then just save as a Targa or whatever. Now, there may be an easier way to do this same thing--if anyone knows, please let me know--but this gives the result exactly as it need to be. If you don''t have Photoshop, I''m pretty sure that Paint Shop Pro will do the same basic things, though I don''t know how off of the top of my head.
