I'm a newbie linux user too (3 months), and I've to say that installing Mandrake LE 2005 was about as easy as installing Windows XP.
I installed ubuntu on one of my pc but im guessing that kdevelop is only on kubuntu. I really enjoy using kdevelop and am wondering if there are any other gui compiliers that I can use for gnome.?

KDevelop isa KDE app. If you want to run it, you must have KDE installed. You can still run it in Gnome as long as KDE is installed on your system.

Basically, all you need to do is stick the install disk back in and tell it to install KDE and dev tools... most decent distros will have a KDevelop (and of course KDE) package on the install disk.

Having tried most every distribution at one time or another, I would direct your attention towards SuSE, Mandrake, and Fedora for distributions that are easiest to install, update, and use day to day. My favorites are SuSE for my laptop (it is VERY laptop friendly compared to most distributions), and Slackware for my desktop (once you go slack, you never go back; not for noobs, though). Now, as far as partitioning, I was unfortunately not actually able to shrink my ntfs partition with SuSE's installer, nor was I able to use the Knoppix live cd partitioning utility to do the job; my only solution was to partition the drive from windows using Partition Magic. But I have heard plenty of SuSE partitioning success stories, so give it a try nonetheless.

Enjoy linux, I know I have.
Ive tried a few latley, Fedora Core 4 was easy to install, lots of packages but the RPM interdependancies and updates were a pain at times. Still a good distro i think.

Suse was equally easy to set up, but i wasnt as impressed with the available packages.

Ubuntu i installed the other day, which is pretty sweet. Less pakages, but i decided i didnt really want half of them anyway.

FC4 was prob the best as a desktop set up, had all you need.

Bare in mind, im a complete linux n00b :)
What's the big deal with linux? is it better then windows or what? what use dose it have?

Please don't derail things with yet another Linux vs Windows debate, mmmkay?

[rolleyes]
I tried some linuxies over the years and the only time I kept one it was Ubuntu.
The only downside with Ubuntu is that you need Internet connection to install some of the stuff, because it comes just on ONE tiny CD!

It is the most stable, the most clean distribution I've seen so far. I actually find it usable!
