Dragon game? (play as creature)
As an extension of the reversing typical game situations idea (and because I'm watching Shrek on DVD) how about a game where you play a dragon, or dragons and have to protect yourself from an army of ignorant humans who want your "supposed gold" (everyone knows that a dragon's lair is full of gold and treasures, just as they know that the streets of London are paved with go ld). You would get cool powers, flying, breathing fire, etc, and have lots of potential weapons and techniques (tail whip / picking people up with your tail, eating them, claws, stomping etc) a dragon could be a really bad-ass character to play as. and have to protect your lair, later in the game you might need to run away from giants and ogres that the King sends to you ... etc. (Unfortunately I am in no position to make such a thing)

There is a movie based game called REIGN OF FIRE. after so many levels of the game you can play as the dragon to destroy the towns or the main castle from the movie.

I fondly recall playing Wing War on my ColecoVision. An updated version of that would truly kick ass.
As a theme, this is a fine idea.
However, the game design you mentioned (the use of cool dragon powers to defend yourself and/or gold) leaves a bit to be desired.
Decide on your market. Is this a game for teens and adults or is it a cute game? I'd suggest making it adult as Spyro the Dragon has been done and your game idea sounds like a similar game (if more action based than platforming).
Now think of a goal. Surviving onslaughts is fine, but who how do you resolve the conflict? Just send wave after wave until your dragon is inevitably overwhelmed when the difficulty catches up to the player's skill level?
Btw, are you a game designer or a student learning game design? This is the kind of stuff you need to think about if you are one of the above, but if you are just a gamer who wanted to talk about a neat game idea then sorry I loaded you with so many basic craft questions.
