Image editing
Can anyone recommend a good, free image editor which is straightforward to use? I currently have Pixia but can't get it to do anything! I could understand Corel Photopaint years ago, or Photoshop - is there something similar available for free (for Windows9X)? I don't want anything too powerful. I need to be able to do blurs, sharpen and that kind of filter. I must be able to greyscale an image (or preferably desaturate it instead). Being able to work with alpha layers properly would be good, as would some abilities to get pretty text - to use for logos etc. One thing I need right now is a very simple alpha texture. Using a radial fade from opaque at the centre to transparent just at the edge. In fact the centre should be opaque for a circle of radius d/4, where d is the size of the texture. A bit like this:
Can anyone with a fade tool knock up even a .bmp version - I can turn it into an alpha map. I'd be so grateful...

The Gimp. They have a build for Windows.
Seconded. Once you get used to the lack of a main window for docking everything, it is quite fun and easy to work with. There are lots of tutorials online as well (a plethera, if you will), and I think there is even a patch to give it that "Photoshop feel" with a main docking window.
