Bit depth dilemma (Mappy problem)

I'm trying to use Mappy for background support for my games, and Mappyal for the programming so i dont have to make my own tile engine. I want to use my own sprites, thing is Mappy only imports images with a bit depth of 8. I tired to import a picture and then change the bit depth but Mappy won't do that. I have MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop, and Painter Classic, but neither program allows me to convert to and 8 bit depth. Was anyone else able to overcome this problem, if so how. Does anyone have any advice or know of a way how i can convert my picture prior to or after i finish it without changeing the images colors or something. Thanks
