Weaponry for a semi-futuristic 3PS
Hey there, Was wondering what types of weapons do you like to play with in a semi-futuristic 3rd person shooter? So far I am thinking of: --Magnum Pistol (can be dual wield) --9mm pistol (can be dual wield) --Desert Eagle (can be dual wield) --Uzi (can be dual wield) --Shotgun --M-16 --Mini-gun --Sniper Rifle --Heavy machine gun with grenade launcher --Grenades --ASP (metal nightstick used by police) ...also could be dual wield That's all I can really think of for the moment. Any more suggestions are appreciated. Just think Metal Gear, Resident Evil, or Splinter Cell as comparisons....nothing like Halo with plasma or lasers. :P
I loved that laser/wire guided rocket-launcher in half-life - that's not too futuristic, and it adds a fun element to gameplay. I also like tactical weapons such as tripwire mines.
-Scoot
OICW 5.56mm assault rifle/smg + 20MM grenade launcher.
M-16 + M204 grenade launcher (doesn't make much sense to put grenade launcher on a heavy machine gun)
FN P90
Heckler & Koch G11 (or other assault rifle using caseless ammo) other link
You say Magnum pistol and Desert Eagle. The (Magnum Research) Desert Eagle uses magnum ammo (cals .357, .44 or .50). You might mean Magnum Revolver(?)

Edit: I second everything Frostburn said, and I think I reiterate some of it below.
Edit #2: Please make sure it's appropriate to dual-wield all those guns. Nobody with firearms training would hold a gun in each hand, especially not a "magnum pistol". If, in the course of a gunfight, you find yourself with two guns, the best thing to do is stick one in your belt, fire the other one properly, and then switch guns.
I'm not sure what kind of setting you're dealing with, but the submachinegun (SMG) like your Uzi is generally considered to be heading out of style for modern military operations.
For the last few decades, the Heckler & Koch MP5 and its variants have been considered the cream of the crop for dynamic entry, secondary weapons and close quarters fighting, but new technology and materials are making smaller rifles practical.
The compact and sub-compact assault rifle is a big thing lately. H&K has the G36C, a miniaturized version of the full-sized G36 assault rifle. Colt's M4 carbine and some other, smaller variations on the Armalite design are also contributing to the field. The "Carbon-15" line from Professional Ordnance is another good example that isn't seen very often.
In a near-future shooter, I'd expect something like that to be available. Small, light, and nimble, it still fires intermediate rifle cartridges (5.56mm NATO ammo, generally), which offers superior penetration against soft or hard armor, and better accuracy at medium to long ranges.
If you do some research, I'm sure you'll be able to find some guns that are functional and sexy for your project.
And what's the difference between a "Magnum Pistol" and a "Desert Eagle"? That's like listing "SUV" and "Suburban" on a list of vehicles. A Desert Eagle is just a specific Magnum Pistol. It's a little played out, in my opinion. Look into a big .45 like the Galena Hardballer, or a Sig P220 with a big fat muzzle break on it. Still awesome looking, but people won't think your guy is a wannabe Agent Smith.
"Shotgun" could be divided. You can have your pump-action Remington 870 with whatever accessories and doodads you like for throwing a wide array of ammo, and then a big old Benelli for spraying the buckshot.
Please don't strap the grenade launcher to the heavy MG. Put it on the M16. The M203 grenade launcher is what people think of when they imagine an under-barrel GL, and those grenade rounds work in other grenade launchers, like the M79 or the H&K 69.
And combine the ASP with grapple moves, rather than making it a dual-wield weapon. Or match it with a pistol and have the "melee" or "secondary fire" be improved by the ASP. For novelty, you could go with a "spring billy", like an ASP but the middle section is a stiff spring.
If you like police weapons, you can throw in pepper mace, stun-guns (and tasers), and all the fun novelty shotgun shells, like beanbags and rock salt, that are considered "less lethal".
Give some thought to different kinds of grenades, as well. Flash, frag, concussion, EMP (it is near-future, after all), gas, pepper mace, sonic, smoke, whatever.
All kinds of silencers and sights could be used to spice up the devices already on the list.
Have fun with it.

Tripmines like ScootA said, and satchels like in the original hl! I loved those things, too bad they didnt being them back in hl2. Being able to rig a room with traps and wait for enemies to come is a blast. Also, the laptop gun from perfect dark was pretty cool. It was powerful but limited ammo and a slow reaction time made it fair and fun.

I remember a friend that had a story about these (he was in the military). Apparently the wire that was used was unshielded, so when it was fired over water, the missile would then lose it's signal. It would then do one of two things, take a nose dive into the ground (that was what it was supposed to do as a safety feature) or it would fire straight up and then fall from the sky when it ran out of fuel. Could be a cool ingame feature.
Tazers that use a stream of water to deliver the shock.
KarsQ: What do you get if you cross a tsetse fly with a mountain climber?A: Nothing. You can't cross a vector with a scalar.
