MMO 2D platform game?
Anyone ever played one? I was thinking of designing one, I had a big world sort of planned, thinking like Sonic 3 and Mario world style of platform play but couldn't really work out the gameplay aspect, i.e what do u do? Any sample Ideas?
No idea. There are ways of course of doing crafting and quests and such, but combat could be difficult....there's not alot of variety in 2d platform concepts, gun, fists, or jump on head are your basics. All castlevanias fall into the fist concept...
Plus one of the things that kept the games fun was the challenge of the platforming (especially in sonic or mario world which you specifically mentioned) However in an MMO setting I think the fun would be novel for a bit, and then just annoying when trying to get from point A to Point B. I mean I want to craft, but to get to the town I have to go through 20 screens of difficult jumps...
Plus 2d Platform games Usually (not always but usuallY) had deadly results from falling...do you recreate that? If you do it could just add to the frustration especially with a death penalty. If not the frustration is how far the playre falls. Nothing pissed me off in metroid more than making it almost to the top of a long vertical shaft only to screw up and end up close to the bottom again due to bad luck. And now add in the frustration of that happening when all I want to do is buy a new set of pants...
On the whole I do not think going the 2d route for MMO's would provide alot of fun. However, I think there may be a good spot in the world for an MMO with some 2d content. Say mini Games, or another such thing. Just a thought.

Ideas presented here are free. They are presented for the community to use how they see fit. All I ask is just a thanks if they should be used.
It sounds similar to puzzle pirates. I personally think its a great game. To say the least, its refreshing from the treadmill grind.
I could picture something like Metroid Zero Mission, or Metroid Fusion being a fairly good setting for an MMO. Varied area's other players can meet etc, with certain area's being town's or trading places, etc. Its alright to make some area's difficult, but to keep the main travel way's interesting and unobtrusive to an extent (the first vertical shaft of the original metroid is an example of what NOT to do).
If the world was big and varied enough, i could see it being alot of fun. Powerups, resources, and even ships could be quite the trading resource, you could even throw in personal rooms in a 2D environment if you liked. :D

'tis. It's currently closed beta so I never got a chance to play it. Michalson was addicted to it for a while.
Your probably right about the metroid environment being good but I was looking for the action packed excitement of say Sonic 3 or Mario World style of play.
Game designing can be difficult when tackling new things lol.
I ran it by a friend and they reckon that just a multi-player death match in the style of these games would be cool, say 20-40 people all running around a huge Sonice level trying to jump on each others heads or shoot bouncing fireballs at each other lol. Sort of like the multi-player mario game on Mario 3.
I don't know I like this idea too but something keeps telling me to find a way to make a 2D MMO game interesting.
I'm gonna check out that game linked but I only saw like 1 player in the pics.
