3DS Max is too expensive!
I currently use TrueSpace 6, which I picked up for about $200 during a sale. I would like to learn 3DS Max, but I'm not sure where to buy it, and I've heard it's around $4,000. Is it possible to purchase it cheaply. Do they have a learning version that's less expensive?

You can try downloading GMax. It's pretty much the same as 3DS MAX, but the plugin system is different.

Did you know you can get TruseSpace 3.2 for free! (TO which they let you get 6.6 for $299 with 8 videos?) Pointless now, but some random FYI. As for 3dsmax best bet is if you were attending college and got a student discount. Other than that, there is no authorized 'Learning Edition' or anything to my knowledge, but you can download the free Gmax and work with that. It is similar to 3dsmax, but it is made for making mods for games. That is the best thing right there, short of giving in to get 3dsMax6 [wink]

3ds max 7 WIN (1-year license) - $179.00
How the heck does that work out? Does the software just stop working after a year or something?
Yeah, the software will time out after one year. I'd plunk my cash on Maya or Lightwave. Cheaper by far.

I don't know about the workings after a year, but 3DS Max is more meant for Entertainment Industries and less for individuals. A one year license is interesting for some companies since it is not always desired to buy the full license if you only need the program for 1 project. That is the thought behind the one year licenses.

The link and prices quoted are only available to students and faculty at accredited schools.
Even if you managed to get ahold of one of these copies legally, you'd still need to pay for the "commercial" upgrade in order to use your work in a commercial product per the license agreement.

Which IS afterall what he was asking for, wasn't it?
He asked for a cheap, educational version; not something commercial.
They sell the educational -> commercial upgrades, too. After all that is said and done, you've spent the same amount of money as the commercial version, however. If you don't know Max already, go with Maya. Max will spoil you (^^), and it's more expensive.
