Shadowrun Thought

There's been a lot of talk in here about a Shadowrun MMO, or a PC Shadowrun RPG. I had this thought today that it might be interesting to create an action/adventure game based in the world of Shadowrun. I don't have a lot of details on the idea...just a few thoughts. Make it a cross between GTA with the large city and such, and the quasi-RPG style action of Deus Ex. Just a thought.

I apologize about the above post, It was early in the morning and I was very tired, and not thinking very clearly.

Its not a well formed idea, but just a thought. I'll expand a little more on it to make it make a little more sense.

Shadowrun the Action/Adventure game I know all of these possibilites may not be able to be added all at once, but this is just the point.

Take the open ended style of play from original Sega Genisis Shadowrun game.
Place that in a large open 3d city (based off the Seattle Megaplex) like the one in Grand Theft Auto.
Add in the Stealth and the Action styles that comes from the Metal Gear Solid Games.
Finally toss that in with a mesh between the PNP Shadowrun and the Deus Ex games.

With that combination of items you could come up with a pretty interesting game based in the world of Shadowrun thats not exactly an RPG.

It'd be like playing Monopoly - the FPS!

Not true. Not true at all.

Shadowrun is an RPG on paper. This does not mean that we have to stick to the RPG origins to create a fun game based on the world.

Look at Mechwarrior. That game is definately NOT an RPG on the computer, but its based off of a pen and paper RPG.

Look at Crimson Skies for the Xbox its a straight up flying game, but its also based off of a pen and paper RPG of the same name.

Creating a Shadowrun Action/Adventure game is not blasphemy, its expanding and using the liscense. What made and makes shadowrun fun and interesting to me is the world and the story, not the game mechanics.

I think the first problem is the refrence to other games. I know you are using it just to give others ideas of what the gameplay would be like but you should try and come up with different ideas, its what seperates the greats from the not so greats.

I remember playing Shadowrun for the SNES the one thing I didnt like was the controls, the thought the idea of moving the cross hairs over the enemy was a bad idea but I guess it was the best for what was available in those days.

I like the world of shadowrun, I never played the pen and paper game but did play the video game. I think it would be good to make it third person where the action is fast passed, with an easy targeting system. Make lots of items for the character to interact with. Make most items in the world able to move or be picked up. I think magic should be easy to use maybe set up a spell system where the press of one key fires the assigned magic at the targeted enemy. Also make more options for the character to choose when talking to others, and give the NPCs an alignment rating where you can piss them off by talking sh*t and then they will attack you. You could use this idea to start gang wars and such.
I think the idea of having several gangs is good and give your character the ability to wear different clothing. These ideas arn't to original though, but its the best I could think of in such a short time.
I think there was a digipen student that was making a 3d remake of shadowrun it was over the 3/4 view. It looked ok but I dont think he got to far on the project. If you go to the students pages on the digipen site you might be able to find it.
ShadowRun is one of the inspirations for our MMO projects. Without psi-magic.
FPS like DeusEx, action-RPG like SystemShock, rpg like Fallout..etc, but with both open-ended action/missions and a structured quest system.

The SNES version was really good for its time...and the PnP version still cant be beaten by all the modern d20 crap.

Mike's RPG Center has a breakdown of the SNES game I think, with creatures and weapons. You could start there as a basis for development.

Cyberpunk is with our culture to stay! Thank you William Gibson and Harlan Ellison!

Well to be honest its not a full-blown concept or even anything similar...it was actually born of just a brain-storm of what to do with Shadowrun BESIDES an RPG.

Right now i'm honestly just looking to expand on possibilites and discussions for a shadowrun game.

Any thoughts
