well, nehe is 14k in dept. so what. i'm about $30,000 in dept. As nehe has done for GL, i've done similar for the Maya API - except i pay all running costs of my site. In my own experiance, there are plus sides and distinctly negative sides to giving away information.

For a start, everyone has the same thing as you on their show reels because it's been copied or plagurised without giving any recognition to the author of the original content. I myself have seen showreels and demo CD's that have been directly copied from my own work with minimal if any extra stuff added in - submitted for a job at the same place i work! So it's really disheartening when applying for jobs to be told that everyone else knows what you do - knowing full well they only know that, because you gave that information away in the first place.

Personally, i recieve around 6000 visits per month, I probably get around 1 or 2 e-mails per month to say thank you. On average however, i get 3-5 job offers per month - I'm sure nehe gets a similar number. We at the National Center for Computer Animation, have offered nehe a job to come and teach here on a few occasions. He has never replied.

tbh, I think nehe is upset at a percieved lack of recognition. I myself have been in the situation where i've actually taken down my site because i've been so annoyed that a siggraph submission was made by one of my students that was infact my own work. Ultimately, you realise that once you have given away your ideas and knowledge, you've actually given away everything.

Educating people is a thankless task. If you really want to support Nehe, send him an e-mail saying thankyou. When you are in a rut and everything seems to be going wrong, a pat on the back makes the biggest difference.
I am very disappointed with what some people is saying but I don't care. I've enjoyed this site pretty much. I've just put my $6. My only regret is that I cannot donate more since I'm also in bad troubles.

Everywhere there is a forum there will be flames. Doesn't matter what the contents are. I personaly bypass them since they always seem to offer nothing good. I've been comming to NeHe for a couple of months now. If it wasn't for this site I wouldn't have been able to pick up opengl as easily as I did. I own about 5 think books on opengl and would still be lost.

The tutorials were great stepping stones for anyone new. And the forums alone provided contacts to a giant and helpful comunity that I read over on a daily bases.

I figure once I am good enough to answer the questions of other's, I will repay the comunity with the knowledge I have gained. As I believe is the right thing to do. Beyond that... if I am able to finish anything of decents. NeHe and the whole comunity deserves credit.

On that note I want to thank everyone for thier help and knowledge, since I have been comming to this site. It definitly means alot to me to have somewhere to go when all else fails or I want to just read through the posts of others and pass time.

Writing code is definitly the most challenging yet rewarding hobby I have ever come across.
