Is turn based gaming dead?
Is turn based gaming now dead? If so, has it been replaced by real time gaming, or hybrid mixtures (such as LSN's order phase followed by action phase?)
“If you try and please everyone, you won’t please anyone.”
Who has the right to say what type of game is dead and what isn't? If you make a kick ass turn-based game I would play it.
As long as we hae online versions of board and car games, such as Chess, Go, Bridge, Poker and such, then turn-based gaming lives on. There will also be turn-based cRPG games and Strategy games, as people simply have different preferences.
Maybe what you really wanted to ask was how popular turn-based games have remained?

Yes thats a big part of the question... do turn based games still appeal to gamers today or are new gamers being put off from trying certain games because they are turn based?

i would feel that turn-based game is still very much appealing, but it's "limited" to hand-held device, as turn-based game allows gamers to play games on the move
It's easy to earn respect... just work-hard and smart AND stop playing Wow in office
I agree with SonicSilicon. It's only a matter of preference.
Personally I like turnbased RPGs like final fantasy used to be, over realtime, 'cause I just like to think for a while when I play.

Well, if you consider tactics games (Final Fantasy Tactics, FFTA, Onimusha Tactics, Tactics Ogre (bad example), etc...) turn based games (and I don't see why you shouldn't, then they're not dead at all. I don't think that they often get the attention they deserve, but Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, for example, sold (from my understanding) many millions of copies, and was recieved well by the mainstream community. I think turn-based games are evolving, and there are enough people out there who appreciate them enough for the genre to survive.

I used to love turn-based games, but I find they suit don't my lifestyle any more. I don't have enough hours in the day, I now prefer 'pick up and play' games because I can play for 5-10 mins and still feel like I've progressed and had fun.
At a ripe old age of 30 you don't have all the free time you thought you'd have. I'm sure younger gamers have the time though. Maybe they should be your target audience.

Just another random thought.
I dont think it's dead. Its not as common anymore, tho. It seems Turn Based games were more common when there were limitations in hardware. Since 3D games are more popular, theres no real reason not to make games that dont utilize new technology.
Tho, Ive played some real fun Turn Based on the Gameboy Advance (Part of the reason Im not interested in 3D hand held machines). Advance Wars comes to mind.
