Hi, I need to send some things off to a potential publisher, one of the things that they require is a playable version of the software with the design document. Does this demo need to be an entire level, or does it simply need to show the basics of what the game can do, e.g. movement, shooting etc.? Any help on this would be great Cheers -Cepheus-
I would assume to get it as polished as possible, so im guessing if you provide a level that would be better.

i dont have any experience with publishers though.

I don't have any experience with publishers but i'd think the more you are able to send the better off you are. You are trying to convince them that they should publish and spend time and money on your game. If the demo doesn't demonstrate that the game will be good, and that you are capable of finishing it in a reasonable amount of time (think Duke Nukem Forever)- it seems unlikely someone would agree to publish it.

Also, signing a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) with the publisher - especially if you are sending your design document, might not be such a bad thing.
Thanks for the advice people! You really helped me out.
A playable version is very importent.
It must have cool graphics, cool gameplay and etc.
Otherwise publishers would choose other game developer team.
PS: Sorry for my english :)
