UNIX newbie question

Because FreeBSD and Linux are open source making for faster bug fixes and easier maintenance. I understand though that Solaris is going open source also though.

It is already Open Source.

To the OP:

But really, why is it so important to use the same OS as the major game companies? Linux is quite well documented and easy to setup and maintain.

I'm guessing there are different OSs used by different companies, some use Windows, some use Linux, some Solaris, BSD etc. Whatever suits their needs best. You should do the same.

It is already Open Source.


AFAIK only DTrace is so far. That would make Solaris still 99.999% proprietary.
