V-chip style technology is the answer methinks. Allow parents to set their PS2's and Xbox's and GBA, ect to now allow certain ESRB levels to be played. Nuff said.
If I like playing pointlessly violent and abbrasive games that is my right and should not be spoiled by parents who cant keep a handle on their children.
Take responsibility for your game's impact / audience?

I agree with this!
Its a simple and effective remedy which would not only stop kids playing games they shouldn't, but will save alot of development companies money that they would have had to pay to lawyers when:
"Young timmy, aged 4, knifed his dad to death after playing Splinter Cell 3 on the Xbox.."
xbox has always had a setting where you can lock out games based on their rating. i assume this information is encoded in the game DVDs, but i have never actually used it (being an adult and all).
i personally oversee the purchase of games for my daughter, and made sure to explain to her that you shouldn't go around killing cops when she found me playing vice city one day.

Recently, in the US, a cop stopped a car that was driven dangerously slow and badly, at about four in the morning. It was driven by a five year old boy who had snatched the keys from his mommy's handbag, and went on his own to hire a video game. Who is responsible for this kid on his own, in a car, at four in the morning? The videogame industry, or his mother?
Fun Fact: Did you know that about 20 percent of the consoles in France are supposed to be modified in order to accept copied games and games from other localized areas? It is also admited that, in a family, whereas the parents are those who buy the consoles, the youths are those who use it most.
Now knowing htat, would you STILL say that the chips are the obvious answer? Most of the modified consoles have NOT been modified at the demand of the parents, and sometimes without even the parents' acceptance. And if people can change the localization chip, how long do you think it will take to modify a console to accept any kind of game, not regarding the rating, but also its origin? Stop burrying your head in the sand, there will always be people, kids and older, who will want to play these games, no matter what you say. If you decide to deprive some of your potential audience of the access to your media, it means that when (note that I did not use "if" voluntarily) they DO access your media, YOU are not the one who is providing it, and therefore, NOT the one who is benefiting from it. Forget about your money. And if a part of your audience can get rid of you, soon, the rest will be able too.
Your own responsibility is to make games that sell, because you are a game designer.
The parents's responsibility is to make sure that their kids don't get rotten in the head, be it from music, comic books, games, TV shows, or anything. Believe it or not, but watching Eminem's videos, "The Real Life" on MTV, or listening to (c)rap music from 50 cent or a discourse by George W. Bush gets you rotten in the brain far more than playing GTA San Andreas. Believe it or not, I am quite fond of Eminem and rap music on the average, and profundly dispise whatever has an IQ number lower than that of anal temperature. Blondes and Presidents can go the same route. And our French President is no better, for those who would be mean enough to estimate that I was anti-American. I don't care where you're from, as long as you can prove yourself to be intelligent and self-reliable.
Yours faithfully,

Not to detract from the lucidity and gravity of your post, but aren't your plagiarizing Jon Stewart, or are you really that good?

Always without desire we must be found, If its deep mystery we would sound; But if desire always within us be, Its outer fringe is all that we shall see. - The Tao
As a teenager myself I see it as a persons responsibility (regardless of age, unless perhaps for those under the age of 10 or so) to make there own decisions. At the age of 15, I am well aware of what I am purchasing when I purchase a game. I know that when I buy San Andreas, I am to keep what happens in the game, in the game. I know not to run around in my parents car shooting people from a uzi out the side window. Same with other things such as Drinking and Smoking (Though I don not smoke). If someone obviosly knows what a cigarrete is and if they smoke them, then they obviously know what risks they are taking. After the age of 10 or so, kids are taught the affects of Smoking, Drinking, etc. There for they understand the responsibities of what they are doing.
The only reason I said people over the age of 10 applies to this is becuase we all know that as young kids were very impressionable, and I believe it's the responsibilities of the parents to ensure nothing bad is brought upon their children until they have a understanding of things, such as what to do with a game and what not to do.

well at least we won't have to worry aboutyour parents trying to shut down the game industry, as they seem to have taken it upon themselves to raise you well.

It is completely ridiculous to blame games for what people do.
Its just another scapegoat. If we continue down this road of blaming developers of products for our actions where's it going to stop? Are we going to ban cooking shows because they show people chopping up meat and some 12 year old said it made them want to do it to their cat?
I have an idea lets just not have anything ever that has sharp edges. Lets pad every wall and every room so no one EVER has to learn something silly like common sense. Lets all don rubber suits and tinfoil hats so the evil game makers can't manipulate our thoughts and make us want to kill our neighbours.
If you can't tell real life apart from a game you either:
a. Have crappy parents
OR
B. you are mentally ill
Remember when they used to stone people to death to make sure there would be a plentiful harvest? Sounds pretty stupid right? Think about how stupid we will look 200 years from now if we actually start holding video games legally responsibile for OUR actions.
If you say video games caused you to do something violent, you are basically admitting that you are easily controlled and influenced by imaginary situations. I'm no psychologist or anything but if I was and someone told me that a video game made them kill someone I'd be requesting that they be locked up somewhere and treated for ILLNESS.

imho almost all properly raised kids do not get affected by violence in games
i was 4 when i started playing doom, i was addicted till around the age of 8.
im 100% fine, im 16 now, i dont have violent tendencies. i do not have a criminal record and i do quite well in school. its the parents who are too lazy to teach the kids whats right and wrong from an early age that should have the blame here. anyway thats just my opinion
