OpenGL winamp content
I am trying to reply to this topic but the forum will not let me (it just returns to http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/default.asp when I click reply) *shrug* :/

Winamp contest over! Let the judging begin...
Could a mod merge these threads please.
--------------------------------
Hi my name is John Baker or my superhero name is Rovastar. I have been involved in creating Winamp visualizations for the past few years (MilkDrop, GForce, R4, etc). I am one of the reviewers (I think I am the only one left) on winamp.com and moderate the visualization forums there.
I had no idea that a competetion was running here for creating a festive Winamp GL visualization plugin until I saw on the homepage of NeHe the following.
"WINAMP GL CONTEST ENTRIES ONLINE
Who could ask for a better group of visitors. The entries from the Winamp GL 2004/2005 contest are now online! A contest created by, designed by and organized by llvllatrix aka Rishi Ramraj. Amazing work on his part! Not only did he host the contest, he also faithfully recreated the contest pages to match my site layout (making it much easier to get the content online). A big round of applause for Rishi Ramraj!!!
An even bigger round of applause to everyone that took the time to enter the contest. Not as many entries as we've seen in the past, but the level of quality in each entry is simply stunning! Download winamp... visit the contest page, and start downloading! If you're having problems installing the winamp plugins, find Snow Globe by Michael Wallace and click the "LONG DESCRIPTION" link. There you will find very detailed information on installing and running winamp plugins.
And hey... it only took me 3 months to get the entries online :( “
But no links (it talks about a website *shrug*) or anything so I went to the forums and no search but eventually Google and digging pointed me to this thread.
I am pleased that such interest has been made and I look forward to checking these plugins out soon (no opengl compatible computer atm and will not have for some weeks. arrrrragh:/). There has not been much new stuff come out that I have found in the last couple of years. R4 (http://www.rabidhmaster.org/R4) was the last good one which Gordon wrote and I did a far few scenes for now though.
Congrats on what has happened so far. If you decide to do another I’ll probably have a blast myself now my OpenGL skills are getting up to speed. Also did you post about this on the Winamp forums? I didn’t see anything about it but we do get swamped in the forums through so maybe I missed it. With future planning I will get something like this feature on winamp.com homepage and *maybe* get Nullsoft/AOL TW involved some sort of sponsorship for it.
BTW Have these plugins been submitted for publication on Winamp.com?
Hi,
Glad you like our work :) Here are the results of our contest:
http://nehe.gamedev.net/data/contests/contest.asp?contest=09
We talked about getting the winamp community involved somehow but like many things around here the general lack of time made the prospect disappear.
Wow, that would be amazing :)
Not to my knowledge. If we were to do something like this, we should first get the permission of the authors. They're usually floating around the forums somewhere...so if you're reading this and you've entered the contest, is it ok? :)
Cheers,
- llvllatrix

Yeah of course the plugins submitted should have the authors permission I would not want it any other way. They can submit them themselves for of a gentle prod in the right direction. :)
Yeah drop me an email or something when you next have a contest. (Rovastar *at* hotmail ) I don't know how things work here tbh (how organised/redtape getting a contest underway is) but I presume have a sponsered/themed compo will be ok. But this things take time so give me plenty of warning and I'll see what sponsership or at least publicity I can arrange for you. BTW do you have any rules on sponsership I have done some OpenGL work for BP and Budweiser in teh past you don't have 'ethical' rules on such companies for sponsership. They probably will not be insterested but a year or two ago the agent acting for Budweiser floated the idea of some sort of compo for a winamp plugin but as with so many of rthese things came to nothing.
What sort of other prizes/sponsership have you here at NeHe/gamedev had in the past?
Just so I can get an idea of what to ask them, etc if they were to be interested.

The right person to talk to Nehe:

My demo was pretty small. I only added 5 lines of code to the basecode to get the triangle wave effect. Feel free to publicate it, redistribution is fine with me!
*News tagenigma.com is my new domain.
Hi Rovastar2. Glad to see some more interest in our competition [smile]
I'm quite happy for anyone to redistribute my "Snow Globe" plugin. It turned out so much better than I ever expected, and I got many encouraging comments, so I'd be keen to see what others think of it. The only problem is that it was a festive season themed plugin, so might be a bit strange now that its March [smile]
My C++ source code (based on llvllatrix's base code) is also freely available on the contest page so interested people can check out just it works "under the hood".
I'd like to submit mine to the winamp.com. What are the requirements for submitting? Do I have to package the plugin in the nullsoft installer? If so, where can I get it?
Cheers

Yeah true the festive theme might look a bit strange now. I will leave it to individual choice to submit it or not. Often good plugin submissions get a few thousand downloads a week. So if you want people to view you stuff and get feedabck it might be an idea. I'll view them myself in the coming weeks when I am OpenGL'd up.
Maybe in the future another Winamp OpenGL vis contest can be arrangedadn we can whip up a bit of publicity/prizes.
