3d rpg questions - map and models
Hello everyone~
*This post concerns 3d map implementation from unrealed or worldcraft, and fully 3d rpgs like Ultima 9. I didn''t find any posts like this before so I thought I might as well ask.*
Game programming has been a hobby of mine for a few years, so I usually start up a new project when an idea comes to mind. I recently received the latest (and probably last) installment of the Ultima series, Ultima 9. Albiet its amazing graphics, story, sound, and interface (in my opinion), the dynamic world loading routine really slows things down. Loading continuously from the hard drive drops performance, whether on a 300 mhz or an 800mhz. I therefore thought of making an Rpg like Ultima 9, but with maps that would load periodically into memory, like Half-Life. Since I''m no way an expert at programming, I don''t feel up to the task of creating my own engine right away, especially a 3d engine. That brings me to my idea - how can I implement maps from such programs as WorldCraft or UnrealEd without using the engine they were intended for? I don''t know how I could modify the HL or Unreal engines enough to have a 3rd person rpg with the interface of Ultima 9 - if you do, could you give me some help? Thanks everyone - come to think of it, (fully) 3d Rpg''s are rare nowadays, but I believe that in the future they will be as common as FPS, given the vast improvements of the Playstation 2 and GameCube. FF12 may not have those pre-rendered backgrounds (speculation) =)

Well..
The unrealed maps are proprietary, so unless you plan on buying a developer liscense (you are rich, right? ) you probably won''t see that source anytime in the next 5 years.
Oh yeah, ffX is supposed to be fully 3d as well =)
