does anyone know whether or not there will soon be an official binding of OpenGL to Java? My instructor doesn''t feel comfortable with using a non-standardized API such as Magician. But I want to use OpenGL for my senior project (and he even mentioned it first anyway). will Sun come out with a binding soon (say, within 6 months) or will Magician become standardized at least? a2k

I don''t know the answer to your question, but here are some quotes from the ARB meeting notes located at OpenGL.org .

Java Bindings

SGI feels that insufficient progress has been made and wants to standardize on Magician bindings. The ARB seemed generally agreeable; a complete spec will be needed. Ideally the result will be a set of freely downloadable bindings like the FORTRAN 90 bindings. SGI will continue talking with Arcane to define a proposal for the ARB,

Ken - lots of Linux going on work at SGI. Monitoring DRI work and seeing if that''s the right basis for Linux drivers going forward. Continuing to work on Java binding issues with Magician. Looking at wider testing and qualification programs and at 64-bit support.
