Future of AI in games
Hey, Im doing a dissertation in my games course and chose AI in videogames for my topic! Can you take a couple of minutes to answer these questions? Cheers dudes Do you feel that AI in games is actually thinking like a human or just doing what it is programmed to do? What is the future of AI in video games in your opinion?
in leeds uni- UK, its ok but the lecturers suck! its mostly learn 3dsmax for urself, im in my final year now so cant wait to finish. Would be a great help if u answer my questions Thanks dude!
no AI in any game is actually thinking like a human, since they can't get a computer to do that (yet?)...
anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something :)

Do you feel that AI in games is actually thinking like a human or just doing what it is programmed to do?
What is the future of AI in video games in your opinion?
1. Thinking somewhat like a human, because the algorithms that are used, is basically a simplified model. (ie, without emotions, or anything that is irrelevent to the game at hand).
2. More realistic models.
From,
Nice coder
Click here to patch the mozilla IDN exploit, or click Here then type in Network.enableidn and set its value to false. Restart the browser for the patches to work.
1) Acting as programmed (even if that includes genetic mods, learning etc).
2) MAIRPG (Multi-AI-RPG). Online games are all well and good but I want to have my meagre ability tested rather than someone who can spend more time playing than me. Give me a huge numbers of 'NPC' that act like humans but are worse at games than me (or at least allow me to be the main player) and I'll be happy.

1: programmed to behave like they are thinking like humans.
2:I think once gfx hit a point of where they are so powerful then AI will get more of a look in. However AI is only going to go as far as AI research goes so it is tyed to that.
AI research is far ahead of anything seen in games.
A great deal of human behaviors have existing programatic solution already done.
The major restriction in games is the need to be inteligent in near real time -- a matter of computing power (CPU cycles, memory required, internal mempry bandwidth for parallel processing) and a secondary one of cost to implement a complex simulation (later reuseably 'thinking' patterns will lessen this greatly).
And luckily AI researchers are being forced to tackle those very problems (of real time intelligence) due to the demand for military simulations and training software that are situated in gamelike environments.
MRE Project at USC/ICT
I don't think that full blown human like AI will be introduced into games. Programmers may come up with a human like program but that would be a huge project in itself and take a lot processor time to processes all of the things needed to be human. I think that games in themself are enough work to create and an AI just need to do what the game needs it to do and thats all that would be programmed.
AI could be smarter than humans and think differently. I thing your question was wrongly formulated. We should say intelligence is unrelated to humans.
Future of AI in games? If GFX would leave some CPU time, it might be spend on AI. It might. And because some game companies are walking in path of minimal requirements, it would be interesting if they would have the guts to allow its game to have a better AI on faster computers.
To nony.
Research of AI in games is more focused than AI research in other fields. It's because games have tighter constrains and higher requirements, you can also see what you did pretty nicely. Forcing the AI to deal with unknown (when it's used in single player games) is nasty problem if developer want to go in a great detail. If you looked through kanga.nu, or other sites you found there a nice amount of tested worked thrown away, polished ideas and code snippets that dealt in some way with AI, world building, interaction of a massive amount of characters.
BTW
Some AIs are pretty psychotical.
