Ubuntu Linux
I found out about Ubuntu (website) from distrowatch.com, and I decided to try it. It looks like a very promising distro and company. They'll even send distro CDs to you for free (here). Anyways, anyone used this distro before? What do you think about it?
My roomie's messing with it as I type. It's a good distro. They have a really nice package manager that's based on apt. Worth a try, particularly if you want a solid distro with the ability to work with advanced stuff if you choose, but don't know too much yet.

It's like debian, right? Except they tossed out a whole lot of crap, right? and they ACTUALLY MAKES RELEASES, right? and the move faster (ythe next release with have Xorg, debian don't have that. The current release had gnome 2.8 long before debian did) than debian, right? and before ubuntu appeared debian was the best distro around, right?
What I'm trying to say is: Best Linux Distro Ever.

I am currently playing with it also, and I have nothing but praises for it.
Very nice and very clean.

just a question from an old time debain lover...
from C-Junkie's post, it seams to be built from Debian?

There's a reason why it's the new #1 at distrowatch(for this month anyways). Plus it's got optional near pornographic wallpapers :D

It is indeed based on Debian, but the packages are in general somewhat more up to date.
In general, it is a very good distro and has a very active and friendly community (check out ubuntuforums.org and ubuntuguide.org).

Indeed, the next release (Hoary Hedgehog) is due to be released in April and will contain Gnome 2.10 as well as XOrg 6.8 and a host of other goodies.
All in all, well worth checking out.
Using it right now as my first ever Linux install. All in all, I'm happy with it. The default install isn't geared up for programming though, so you'll need to download things like GCC and the Autotools collection from the universe - but that's no problem with apt. I really should make a thread with some decent Universe links I've found, some things (such as Mono) can be a pain to install.
I'd recommend it personally.

It didn't work properly on my laptop - I was left with a big cross in the middle of my screen when running X (I'm sure a lot of you know the cross I mean, you've probably seen it when X is first loading, before it turns into what your mouse cursor looks like), and after using it for a few minutes my my would always stop working.
I've never had this problem with any other distro, but didn't spend any time trying to fix it (the X config file looked ok though) since I never really intended to use it full time, I just installed it to see what it was like.
Other than that I was impressed though, and I've not heard of anyone else having problems with it, other than one person not being able to get their sound working
