So what exactly happens when a game gets canned? Do the developers just ditch all the code/art/etc that's gone into it or would it get reused somewhere else along the line?

Creating My Own Survival Horror Game, please tell me what you think.
i doubt one can judge how fun a game is before trying it hands on.
anyways:
depends on who owns the IP: if the publisher does, it stays in limbo until they decide to either sell the IP or revive it. Sometimes the devs buy the IP themselves.
If the devs own the IP, they could either sell it for someone to finish the game (very unlikely. Easier to start over) or they could just scratch and start again (ala Duke Nukem Forever apparently)
Both ways, the code surely gets tossed, art may survive, design docs are likely to survive with modifications.

Working on a fully self-funded project
Yeah well, looked / looks promising. Basically a comment about the stage that they were at in that article. Pity they canned it, could have been good.
I've heard that some projects get released to the public when canned - open source style, but that is a minority. If they built an engine I suppose that could be reused. Possibly what happens depends on why and how it was canned in the first place. If the publishers ran out of money the dev team could look for another publisher.
Perhaps there is a cancelled game heaven where all the games that could have existed actually do. I think that is where I am going when I die. All the mmorpg's that new users talk about, all the ideas for games that I have had. It would be a happy place.

well.... sorry if im wrong but..... it doesnt sound creepy to me....
if you have to smash a window before the horror begins, you would be in control of WHEN it starts. you shpuld have some dark plot where you dont know what happends, but have some idea something is wrong (take the idea that someone stands behind you and when you turn around, noone is there, but that you still have the feeling.....)
what im trying to say is that horrors attraction lies in surprise and not knowing.... the user needsto be guided around, if its free roam, the story would be to loose, and you would be into control to much.... you gotta have some idea of control, but you really shouldnt HAVE any

If there are lots of zombies then the scare factor decreases, if there are a few in enclosed spaces then it increases. You could use both in a game. Huge swarms of zombies is cool for the survival part, but not as scary. Having a zombie jump out at you through a window is scary.
If your mission was go get somewhere, and that mean that you had to travel through a building then although you have the control over when you enter the building, you still are in an uncomfortable position. But I agree with Red Falcon, the roam doesn't seem to lend itself to creepyness. What is creepy is when you have to leave your vehicle to go into a building and there are no zombies around, then one jumps out at you.
I can't think of anything creepy that can happen to you when you are in a vehicle. If you are just roaming around without a vehicle I can thing of a few things, but they just don't seem as scary as an indoor environment.
Basically there seem to be two gameplay styles here, when you are travelling around (roaming) the city, and when you are inside a building. The question then is whether these two styles work well together. I think they could. Roaming could be seen as safe situation, but then entering a building the scary part.
I really don't play scary games well. That is to say that I really like them, but I get freaked to hell. I could see myself sitting in a car ourside the building that I need to enter to further the story saying "I'm not going in there, it is too scary" and then forcing myself into the building. Then running out back into the car when it gets too much.
So basically while you can free roam, the story needs to be fairly linear. I think it needs to center around locations, like this time we need to go to the town library to find out such and such - now we need to go to the such and such.
Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick is another game that has some of the same qualities as this idea.

This Survival Horror Game is going to be like no other. Its going to revolutionize Survival Horror Games all over the world.
The game is a mix between them old regular survival horror games with the zombies (resident evil), the creepiness (silent hill) and then it will have free roam ability ( like grand theft auto).

When your walking down the street and you see a building that you can't get into you might break a window to get in it. So then once you get in the building a hole new creepiness will take effect. If you all want to help with character design or level design or just plan ideas then you are more then welcome. Just IM me.
THINK AGAIN!
Why?. Silent Hill is more a psycho-thrilling game. Resident Evil is a survival-thrilling game and GTA is a best sellers. You cannot mix anything and hope to have a decent game.
In fact SH is slow and have some puzzles. You need to read a lot and go inmerse in the story.
Resident evil is the *OPOSITE*.. just survive is enough for finish the game.
So, you want a fast game or a slow game?.

Being a huge fan of Evil Dead and Zombies in general, I must say that this game kicks righteous ass. It's more about 'fun' than being a survival horror though, but the game rocks regardless.
The game is very cool.
Ah yes, Ash's one liners.
Hey can I borrow your face for a while? My ass is on vacation.
What was that? Im sorry, I couldnt understand you on account of your face being blown off.
I'd like to buy a vowel. How about AA AAAA AAAUUGGHHH!!!
Psst....your maggots are showing!
You know Eldrige, your mouth is like my ass. Nothing good ever comes out of it.
Talkative bunch arent you.
Some are born to use a chain saw some have chainsaws rush upon them.
Sorry about your face. Lemme get you a tissue...or a mop.
Lets dance!..you lead.
Yeah, I love my chainsaw...Guaranteed to break the ice at parties.
So the squirrel says do what ever you want with you'r nuts man. I'm eat'n mine!
"Oh Ash! You saved us again! How can I ever thank you?"
"Well, let's see.....You ever see a little movie called "Deep Throat?"
"ASH! Really....."
Butt and Ugly decided to have a kid,and guess what, you're the result.
Ever read the book, Farwell To Arms? Well I wrote it.
That can't be your face. Did your neck throw-up?
MPH...MPH...Hey,what's that perfume your wearing?
You know, I just love it when the parts go flying everywhere.
We have secretly replaced this deadites brain with a chainsaw.... shh, lets see if he finds out.
Hey, I think I just found a cure for ugly.
Yes sir, you may have another.
I dream of peace, you dream in pieces.
