Personally, I think that Developers who just make games for money are selling out their souls. I make games because I love to, and when I do so I put my heart into it. I don''t care if the market will hate what I write, but as long as I know I have done my best I will be happy. DoomII and QuakeII and III come to mind as sellouts.

Dangit, dwarfsoft, I''m trying to make peace with crass commercialism and the idiot money / rockstar designer stupidity of the game industry. Don''t go upsetting my applecart!!!!

Really, though, no matter what you want to do, you''ve got to make compromises. Accursed though it may be, economic reality is __RUTHLESS__. You don''t sell, you don''t eat. End of discussion. I can understand why some would choose to play it safe.

(Another thing hard to reckon with, tho'': Sell-out or no, lots of people like those games as is . Oh well...)

If you've never played Yserbius, let me know. I'll upload you a copy of it. Sierra isn't concerned with it anymore..

I haven't ever played this - if it's abandonware, I'll find it on Abandon Keep, and play it, and start a thread on it
[Edit: Couldn't find it on Abandon Keep - so I'd like to try it out if you send it to me.. ]
[Edit2: Found it after all, seeing if it works now..]

People might not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.

I mean, Baldur''s Gate got REAL boring. 40 hours of gameplay? who the hell plays 40 hours? I''ve got other games I want to play, so i can''t devote ALL my time in a week to one single game, otherwise it gets old. And if I don''t devote all my time, then it''ll take a year to beat it, and who wants to wait that long? That''s why most people chat these big games! When you''re playing solo, you want a game you can beat in 8 hours or so if you know it back and forth!

Aaaaaha!!!! You, my friend, are a finisher!!!!

Am I right? Would you never want to bake bread just to bake bread in an RPG? Are you more the type of guy who looks at a game''s screenshots rather than the review first?

(Man, this is easy. I''m gonna try FBI profiling next...)

I don''t believe I am a finisher really. As I said before, BG is not boring ''cause it''s long. It''s boring ''cause I felt like I finished it after the first hour of playing. After that it was the same crap. Go here, do this...oh no there''s a spider attacking. The only interactivity was really when you could choose which party members stay w/ you. The side-quests weren''t too fulfilling either.

See...part of me does feel this way, but I think it just depends on what you want in life. If you want to make games for a living there's a decent chance you will have to compromising your integrity. Personally, I don't have much interest in that. I'd perfer making games for myself, and hopefully make some profit on the side. Then, have a more typical job as a living.

It all depends on whether you want games to be the main source of income IMO. At a typical 9-5 job people do what they can to make more money, so I can at least understand developers "selling out" a bit. It depends on whether you want to make games to express yourself or to be part of a big coporate business. I know it's not that cut-and-dry but there is truth to it no matter how depressing.

I have no problems with those games, but the problem I have is with all of the clones. Clones are fine for beginners but as commercial games, why would you just make a copy of another game and sell it again. Sure it is easy money, but I would have the knowledge that it was not my game. If you put your heart in then it shows in the product.

Clones are OK, but you wont find me buying them, as well as many others that I know...

by finisher.. you mean? someone who tries to finish a game? I wouldn''t want to bake bread in a game just for the sake of baking it.. i''d want it to mean something. I mean, if i baked bread and gave it to some homeless guy.. that''d be cool. But if i baked it and just walked around with it.. then that''d suck. I mean, if i didn''t even mold, i''d call it bad programming and designing.
Yeah, i look at screenshots.. while reading a review. I also take friend''s comments a lot more over what i heard from a review, since a lot of reviewers don''t have the same likes as i do.

I have to admit.. i got BG2, collector''s edition. It looks to be a bit better than the first. I''ll letcha know when i get done with icewind dale and start in on it.
As for clones.. we''ll not go there. LOL. some of em are better, most aren''t. look at unreal tournament. It''s like sequals.. if it''s the same engine, same thing.. slightly different arsenal.. stupid. But if there''s a plot change, etc.. hehe. that''s cool. I liked fallout 1 and 2 because you played different people. you weren''t the same "hero".
Anyways.. i''m still keeping all my past games in mind when i make my own games. Each one of them had parts i liked and parts i didn''t. We''ll see how it goes.

J
i am also going to have to say Metroid for the old NES. That might be my favorite game of all time.

Oh, I see what you mean, dwarf. I do agree w/ that. I was looking at the preview for Divinity. It sounds exactly like Baulder''s Gate. If they are going to make a shallow game, then can at least make a slightly original shallow game
