Hey I just want to get your opinion. What game would you like to see next, another RTS or another FPS? There are pros and cons to both of them. For an RTS it would have to match up to the likes of warcraft and with an FPS it can't just be another boring shooter. What do you think the pros and cons are to making these types of games? In terms of programming difficuilty? Thanks

My first tought as to write LOL or something like that. I guess I feel evil today, sorry.

But now to give some constructive critics..
Some people might like FPSs and dislike RTSs or the other way around. Some people might be tired of RTS and want to play FPS, or, the other way around. So it just depends on the trends.

However about pros and cons in terms of programming difficulty, if you make your RTS 2D you can take the load of using 3D. However the AI in RTSs are brighter than FPSs. RTSs will take more effort on design however.

If you are looking for an answer to the question 'what type of game should I try to make', I would answer a simple RTS. Nothing too bright, just a nice, fun and playable RTSs.

By the way if you do make the RTS, maybe you want to try to make that simple FPS afterwards.

I'd suggest trying to see how many new or interesting ideas you could come up with for each type of game. Then, whichever you have more ideas for (or whichever you think would be more fun or more practical) go with that.

Ultimately, you should try to go with the one you can be (most) sure that you will stick with.
I'd like to start of by saying that this pisses me off. No offense.

I was *just* finishing up a convo about how some of us are tired of seeing *only* those two genres on the shelves. I'm talking minutes. Aren't there other genres??? Jeez.

I got this shiny new force feedback joystick off of ebay a few weeks ago. Know what I've used it with? Urban Assault. That's it. Every other game either has weak forces, no force at all, or no real use for a joystick. Mechwarrior is cool too, but it gets old to me. I'm gonna go fix this by writing a new post to bitch about it somemore, and start up yet another design document. RIGHT NOW.

To answer your question, in order of increasing difficulty. IMO:
1. RTS (2D)
2. FPS (3Duh)
3. RTS (3D)

But seriously, the world has enough of both to last awhile.

Make a combination with stategy and action is my idea :P FPS and RPG are flooding the market, and its all fairly the same (excluse HL2) some origional ideas would be really nice
