ahw,
"Startide Rising" by David Brin takes place in the future after the human race has ''uplifted'' dolphins genetically. A joint space mission, the first involving humans and dolphins, becomes implicated in a major inter-galactic war...
"Hyperion" by Dan Simmons, among other things, involves these AI entities that were developed long before the book takes place. These AI''s have redeveloped themselves, evolved, are so powerful, and feared almost as if they were gods. Not only do these AIs span networks on one planet, but span and reside within the network of the entire galaxy...
These are two incredible sci-fi books, both winners or nominees of the Hugo or Nebula awards or whatever.

I''ve always thought it would be neat to have people or creatures with multi-purpose nanotech "clouds" all around them. They could form walls or shields, process foreign atmospheres, rearrange the matter under your feet to create a sort of moving carpet, all kinds of neat stuff.
Then you''d see certain types of electric and magnetic fields to "dust" for nanobots. You''d have to walk through a field to enter a government building, for instance.
Another source of inspiration might be Neal Stephenson''s "The Diamond Age". I haven''t had a chance to read it yet, but isn''t it supposed to be all about nanotech?

How about if implants are made of nanotech. But some people have had the misfortune of the nanotech screwing up and taking them over. Is this a little over the top?
"So you're the one that designed that game are you?"
*Gulp* "Umm, yeah"

What?!?! You''re the creator! Nothing is over the top if you say so!!!
Nanotech taking over your system, tho'', would imply: some ability to influence the brain chemistry and personality. Now, rather than a misfortune, which would probably result in poisoning of the system, maybe you''re talking about a conspiracy???

Nanotech, I think, could theoretically be used to create a sort of biotic gel, almost like the Slimes you see in countless RPG''s...
or you could have something that can infinitely re-assemble itself after taking a cap...
I wish the Nazrixians no harm. I would, however, like a Nazrixian escort to my car.

BTW, Paul: From Queen of Angels, by Gregory Benford had an interesting use for nanotech... you sneak in rather inoculous looking components into a secure area, and it can reassemble themselves to things like weapons after a few hours.
Security forces would practically have to strip you naked to make sure you didn''t have anything. And even then, you could be wearing a "skinsheet" of n-tech that reassembled into a file in your cell.

Yeah, i never thought i''ve that one. Nanotech would have a huge impact on society in a massive way. So many different ways it could be used it makes the mind boggle.
