I've been self-teaching Maya 6.01 Unlimited and been doing very well so far, but I ran into some trouble. I had just finished my first highly detailed model of a Greatsword. Well it seams I can't find any good information on how to add colors/texture my sword. I've got no clue. I know how to map the sword, but it just doesn't look right and then again if I do save the UV Mapping and add color I've got no clue as to how to import the colored one. Anyone got any tips? I'd add the image to the forums, but i'm new to them and don't know how. Thanks.
I don't use Maya, but to add the image to the forum, just make sure it's posted online somewhere (if you need a place to post it just go to image shack and upload your picture). Then just put the html code in your post, in case you're not familiar with HTML, it should look like this:
[img src="http://www.yourwebsite.com/yourimage.jpg"/]

(with "[" and "]" replaced by "<" and ">" respectivly)

Sorry I could not be of help with your real question.

right-click and hold on your UV mapped sword. A sub menu appears containing a lot fo different things. Directly downwards is the material section. Go to material>assign new material>blinn.

Attributes for the material should appear. In this window you can set basic colour, specularity, reflection, etc. But every attribute can also be mapped by clicking the little checker button. Once you click one, a window appears asking you what you want to map to it. choose file and tell it where to go.

check the maya help files too - this is all there.

alternatively, you can go window>rendering editors>hypershade and create a blinn from there. Then you can middle-drag a material from the hypershade window onto an object.
