hi there. well i was searching for a decent linux distribution that is free (it seems like everyone needs some money these days, even the open source comunity). well i found this fedora core project, wich it's said to be totally free. so i'm downloading it now(while writting this) but i want to know your opinion. should i install this thing? i have very few experiences with linux(just installed once the mandrake 9 but i've quit because the boot loader failed every time the computer wasn't stopped without shut down(even if from windows). i guess it's because the hard drive is a SATA one. anyway, it was a nightmare.
Pop by www.ubuntulinux.org & give that a try. It's a new distro just coming out.
Okay so maybe this reply isn't all that usefull to your question , but I thought I'd mention that ubuntu are doing free delivery of cd's @ the moment (they well be sent on the offical release day which is in a week or so I think). It's a very nice distro & heck even if you don't like it there's no harm in ordering some nice free cds ;]
It's based off debian & is very nice. [grin]
& yeah the cd's are free to order & the delivery is free also (whereever I believe) so go order as many as you like.
You could always make a nice little light feature in your room out of them if you dont use them... [cool]
hehe

I use Fedora and like it quite a bit. Redhat's what I sort of "grew up" using, so when I've tried other distros they just don't feel quite right. Anyway, I am really happy with Fedora 2, although if you plan on dual booting it with XP, you should probably read this before installing.
I've quite enjoyed using Fedora.. it has excellent device support.. acpi built in if you're running on laptops. It's simple to set up and feels right.

I use fedora and it hasnt given me any problems. Admittedly I havent used any of the other distros but this works for me and I think it will work for you [smile]

In spite of its "excellent device support" I was unable to get it to run on some very old hardware (pentium 1/scsi/no cd boot). Just a warning if you are doing something strange like trying to use old hardware, a task that seems to eat alot of my time for and rarely seems to work out anyway.

Having trouble deciding which distro to try out?
Wow! That chooser really worked.. I have used LFS for years and LFS got 72%. I have considered to try out gentoo and surprise surprise gentoo got 63%! :)
I have the same as Winograd. However, I've been using Gentoo for few months I'm rather satisfied. I don't consider using another distro in the near future. I have no experience with Fedora, but I'd recommend Mandrake for a beginner. I started with it myself and really enjoyed it.
I gave the linux chooser a shot just to see what it would recommend. I wasn't too surprised with the results though.

Distro name Match %Mandrake 8/11: 72%Fedora 8/11: 72%Knoppix 7/11: 63%SuSe 8/11: 72%Debian 9/11: 81%MEPIS 8/11: 72%Gentoo 7/11: 63%Slackware 10/11: 90%Ubuntu 9/11: 81%Vector 10/11: 90%Arch 8/11: 72%Ark 8/11: 72%LFS 8/11: 72%EvilEntity 10/11: 90%Based on these results we recommend you to try(if you haven't tried it yet):Slackware

Edit: Apparently tables don't work on this forum.
Edit 2: ahh, that looks better
