Hello Everybody: It''s the grand month of October and there''s a new poll on the Game AI page (URL below). This month''s poll focuses on AI SDKs and toolkits. Have you ever used one and, if so, which one? Was it a worthwhile experience or was it the worst investment you''ve ever made? Or, if you haven''t used an AI SDK or toolkit, why not? Hope to see you there! -- Steven Woodcock From the High Mountains of Colorado http://www.gameai.com

Well, I for one, haven''t used such thing. Firstly because I don''t know of such AI kits. Second, because I don''t see what it would bring me. I am still learning all that stuff, and if I am to learn anything, I''d rather do it by myself, the hard way. Plus, if you are to discover something new, I don''t really see how using something ready made will help you towards that.
I am of the style, if you want something new, make it from scratch.
Mmm, wonder if it makes sense ...

Makes perfect sense (to me, anyway). The AI SDK market is only just beginning to develop, and I actually don''t expect there to be many folks who have used these puppies yet. The whys and wherefores ought to be interesting, however...I think we''ll see several variations of your own comments.

Now don''t get me wrong, if someone develops kits for people to understand what AI is, for educational purposes for instance, I would definitely agree with the idea. But I''d emit the same rambling that I emit against VBasic, that is, if it makes any moron able to think he is now a coder, that''s a *bad* thing (not that it makes me jealous, just that it gives a wrong basis to the beginners, who think "hey, it''s that easy, cool, I can get a job doing that now!").
