The re-birth of Adventure
I bought the Monkey Island 1 + 2 CD from ebay a few months back, downloaded the SCUMM VM for XP and had a good old time [grin]

The true reason that many companies no longer invest in Graphic adventures is the ratio between cost and income. Adventure games are among the costliest genres to create, due to all the art that is involved. Many companies simply do not want to invest that much money into one game when the income is going to be roughly the same as a game of a cheaper genre. At least, that is how it used to be. I'm not even sure about the situation now, as I'm sure it is much cheaper to have prerendered environments than the old fashioned 2d backgrounds done by hand.
I have recenetly seen a lot more 3d and prerendered graphic adventures on store shelves lately. I'm not sure how well they have sold.

I understand where you are coming from Mr. Jacobs.
I would like to see more and new original ideas but all I see in the next couple of months is the same ole games with new graphics and no new ideas for new games.I am tired of these games. My favorites are all out there.
Platform,Sci-fiction,action-adventure,planesimulators,driving simulators, survival horror,puzzle,role-playing games, fps. I am also into getting into a great story to read and see how the game unfolds at the end.
So keep up the great work at your company and dont let these huge companies get you down when you are coming out with something new and original.
Can't Wait to Play your game.

So I guess what I want to know is, what the heck happened?
I hate getting stuck on puzzles. I play games to have constant fun. Most adventure games being so linear, all it takes is one puzzle I can't solve fairly quickly and my progress is halted. That is not fun. That's why I don't play adventure games any more. And I played a LOT when I was young.
Just something to think about if you're trying to attract people outside the hardcore adventure crowd.
EDI,
You have a good point and it's one I've been pondering. I enjoy picking up classic games and playing them for the very reasons you've described. I am terribly gun shy about buying new games, because although they have better graphics, the experience is all-to-often ruined by a deficiency somewhere else. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

The most recent adventure game I think was going to be the new Sam & Max game. Then Lucas Arts canned it and decided on another Star Wars rehash game instead.
I think that pretty much sums up the sad state of adventure games at the moment.

Let me be the first to remind people of that awesome new adventure game that just came out called "Peasant Quest."
If you haven't looked at it yet, I suggest you do so.

I think the gendre has became a niche market, kind of japanese bishoujo games, if you like it, you'll dig for em and find them, but you can't expect the anticipation and the big marketing that mainstream (I.E. Half Life 2) games have anymore.
I was going to get "The Longest Journey" the other day, people say its pretty good, I might still get it sometime.

Now I think about it, Zelda:WW is about the closest you can get for new games. Exploration, conversations, puzzles, (simple) item interaction feature quite heavily. It just happens to feature a large dollop of combat as well. [grin]

Yeah I agree with that statement. Adventure games don't get the same level of hype as other games, and as a result, people think that nobody is making any good ones any more.

TLJ is awesome. Definitely recommend it.
Syberia 1 is cool too. (have not played 2)
Also, Myst Uru: Complete Chronicals is a good buy, there's a lot of content in it for just one game. Did anyone play it? Do you remember the first puzzle on Ahnonay? Man, that puzzle was one of the coolest gaming moments ever for me. Such fond memories for that game.
