HI, vague beginner here
Hi. I''ve spent the last couple of months learning C++. I know that it''s the best language for a game, I just don''t know how to get started. Right now i just want to have a basic background and some sound. Any help would be appreciated.
Personally, I found the book "Real-Time Strategy Game Programming using MS-DIRECTX 6.0" by Mickey Kawick a good beginners reference (assuming you are rather comfortable with C/C++ now). Particularly, the first half of the book. In the first half, he explains in detail what he is doing and why. ''bout the middle of the book, the descriptions begin to fade away (I guess he assumes we know what he is going to do by that time).

I suppose you want to make games for Windows with DirectX? Then I can recommend the book "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" by Andre Lamothe. It''ll teach you the basics of DirectX, Windows programming and game programming in general.
