Hmm, how about a game revival contest?
Hi, what do you guys think of a game revival contest? Trying to recreate a game's concept but with different (home-made) artwork?
I came up with this when i played Carmageddon again yesterday and i thought it would be a good test on the overall gamedev skills of the contestants to let them all recreate such an old game again (such an old one to make it not too difficult and impossible, it's not all about effects but more about gamedev-skills in general).
I know many of you probably don't like the idea that much (at least i think you don't) but i like the idea because i'd simply like to participate in such a contest (i'd like to recreate a game which has a lot of sentimental value to me :P ) and i think, when there is enough time, it is a good gamedev lesson too us all.
There could be either a few games of choice or just any before lets say 1998. Judging will be done by looking at graphics, physics, sound, music, models, gameplay, play-time, the size of the whole package and the number of contestants in that group (maybe just divide the score by that number).
What do you guys think?
I think I really like the idea, but there's a LOT of retro-remakes out there on the web already. On the other hand, creating new versions with own artwork etcetera could be a whole lot of fun!
Newbie programmers think programming is hard.Amature programmers think programming is easy.Professional programmers know programming is hard.
I think when you re-create a game that has at least some sentimental value for you it will be a whole lot of fun creating it. I think some people on this forum are able to make retros a lot better than the average retro on the net (most of them are not good at all, they suck at artwork, gameplay and are simply a shame for the original game). At least some people on this site are able to make good and fun-to-play retros, and they are (when you choose the right game) fun to make.
I think it's a dead-end regarding legal issues. Remember what happened to the Zelda remake project ?
well, in fact
i have a project for remaking one game
wich is very very old
(i runned in a 386)
i dont care too much the legal issue
im no planning to sold it, or something like that
