I was reading ''modelling a char in 3ds" by paul steed and he goes over a method he uses for texturing objects. I searched on here and found some posts on it, but I still cant get it to work. He uses Unwrap Modifier on the stack to lock in the UV''s, then he turns off ''Edit Mesh'' then it shows the object as 3d with the new textures on it. Is there a tutorial online that shows this method or can someone explain? I looked and found a couple but couldnt get it to work. I see they have edit mesh on the stack alot of times, but i cant get it to appeaer but once. Thank you
what ver of max u got?
You should be able to add numerous edit mesh modifiers to the modifier stack... You could keep collapsing the mesh to an editable mesh.. (no its not the same) ..an edit mesh modifier can be turned of or reverted, an editable mesh is the mesh with no history saved.. (remember that, u cant revert so save lots)

right click the modifier stack to get the option to collapse to editable mesh... your mapping co-ordinates will be saved.. so you can just select a piece of the model, add uvw map to give it mapping co-ords, then uvw unwrap to adjust/edit those co-ords, then collapse the stack and (ur mapping will be saved) add another edit mesh and select some more faces to texture with said steps ....a way to slowly texture..piece by piece

i personally do it differently.. for characters anyway,
i make an *exact* clone of the model, make it flat...so its easier to map..then export a pic o the wireframe rendered, texture it in psp and apply to model.. then i use the morph modifier to change it back to original shape using the cloned model.. you can cut your model in bits so the back and front are facing forward so u can easily texture with one texture..you do this by detaching faces/polygons to elements... *morph* only works with two models that have the exact same faces/vertexes amounts so clone the model *after* you cut it up... when your done and have morphed the character back to shape just weld all the points back... hope that wasnt to complicated... spose it was jargon to me starting out to.. :/ ( jargon = mis-communication ) hope i helped :|

Ahh thank you so much, Currently I use the method that you mention of cloning the object trick, but I wanted just to learn a new method. I will the steed method a shot again after reading your reply because I think it may have cleared up some things for me. I will let you know if it works.
