better instruments for modplug
the instruments in modplug are utterly fake and stupid. anyways, i was lookin around for better instruments, and i recall hearing about a replacement instrument set (or wavetable set) that starts with an ''E''. Like that helps....but....can anybody give some pointers where I can download some better instrumentation?
Thanks a lot,
Ciph

ModPlug requires samples to playback sound, and the bank you are hearing in ModPlug by default is just the GM.DLS file in your System32 folder under the windows directory. It''s a really crappy DLS bank because well...you already know.
Anyway, you can download a lot of free samples for individual instruments in WAV, MP3, etc formats to use, but you''ll have to remember which pitch the samples are in, and make sure they are mono(yes...modplug is stupid).
Then you can also use Soundfonts (SBK and SF2) but they are in stereo and also have the data saved differently than DLS, so when modplug tries to read the instrument information it usually screws everything up and you have to go through and edit all the patches used.
Now, if you really want to get good samples for it, I suggest posting at ModPlug''s forums and asking.
Peace.

Not that it''s a big deal, but MPT does support stereo samples. The soundfont problem is usually related to layered instruments.
Yeah, I know...but for some reason it screws up terribly when you use stereo samples in GBA music. :D Haven''t figured out why yet, but the device the programmer is using seems to want to play each channel of a stereo sample at different times...aka...it plays the left sample and then the right sample directly afterward. All I ever use ModPlug for is GBA games so I don''t know too much about it other than I suck at using it.
You should try this place...

Never you mind!
AFAIK, the gameboy advanced is a lot ''happier'' with pure left, pure right, or pure mono samples, no in-be-tweens. Makes it run a lot faster, so keep that in mind.
"Mommy, where do microprocessors come from?"

That''s because Stereo Samples are non-standard in mods, infact, I''ve never seen them until ModPlug (and never use them myself).
For GBA only use 8bit, mono samples. It depends what sound engine you''re using as well as to what mod format they will support and what sample properties/instrument properties/commands they will support.
