Well, I've been making a massivly multiplayer real time stragey for a while now, and while surfing the gamedev fourms... I find an AD that for some reason holds my interest, but has no information about what I'm clicking on. So, it turns out to be my game exactly except for the fact that it is in a browser and it's turned based. I've never heard of the game in my life, and I actually though my idea was alittle new, but I guess every idea has been thought up before for the most part. After all my rambling a question comes to mind.. Should I continue with my orignal plan, they way I saw my game, or talor my game to be differnt and have better features than this competitor? And if anyone has any experences with a semi-new idea and having to find out someone has already done it, tell your story! I know how annoying it feels... lol Thanks for listening! - DarkNebula Galatron.net - The massively multiplayer real time strategy! [edited by - DarkNebula on May 3, 2004 8:32:08 PM]
The game I''m talking about is that Ferion game I saw a banner ad for. http://ferion.com

If people stopped making fps:es after DOOM was released, there would be a whole lot less games out there

Honestly, even if two programemrs(/designers) starts out with the same idea, they usually come up with a very different implementation.

I''d say you go on and make your game the way you want it and not care much about if it''s been done before. This is your game.

Statisticly seen, most things happens to other people.

Plz don''t post stupid questions, I''m almost sure that your just someone who got all excited about writing your first hello world program and now is planning on what to do on the weekend. :-D
Actual Linux penguins were harmed in the making of this message.
The same happened to me.. My goal is to make a (probably singleplayer) space sim/ rpg / fps / rts , combining space flight, FP inside spaceship walking/action, trading, piracy, FP planetside action, big battles -> either pilot single fighter or order ships around as a commander etc...
Wavinator is designing something a bit like it except he seems to focus on the rpg bit + strategy, and last week someone from Nevrax (makers of Saga of Ryzom) was looking for staff for their MMORPG that had a lot of the same features..
Doesn''t matter though.. When I learn enough to do it my game will probably be different from both of those in a lot of ways.

No, not really. Look at my website. Geez. We are almost to beta. We have been working pretty hard for the last month or two. Sockets are all done, and the GUI is all done, and more... We have an okay design document up too. Galatron.net I was also just wondering about the thoughts of finding out that your game has been done before, almost the same exact way. When you think it's a little new...

hm.... keep going. Like a poster said above, even if its been done before, it can be done different/better. You may have been wrong thinking it was unique, but it is a smaller niche at the moment, one that a good inde developer could probably fill quite easily.
Unfortunately (for you), there are alot of browser based games similar to Ferion. Imperial Conflict & Planetarion spring to mind. There are even more turn-based massivly multiplayer games for browsers with non-space themes (they are the ''easiest'' MM games to write and so every kid who knows PHP, ASP, etc and SQL tends to make one).

I only know of one real time MMORTS tho, Shattered Galaxy by Nexon (http://www.nexon.net/).

It looks like you have put alot of effort into your game so I can''t see why you should give up, just because there are other games in the same genre.
Can you control your units in battle? In Ferion, Imperial Conflict, Dark Galaxy, and all of the others like that, you CANNOT. If you can in your game, then your game already is ahead of theirs; when you finish, you can visit their forums and explain to the players of these games your great new feature. Although, this could be somewhat cruel to the makers of those games...

If only I could just write them down...
I am the master of ideas.....If only I could write them down...
You could use the other game you found as research. Play it, and decide what you don''t like about it, then change in your game.
